Google is set to invest $75 million in A24 in a new AI research partnership. The deal brings together one of Hollywood's most respected independent studios and one of the world's largest tech companies. Google DeepMind and A24 are expected to focus on technologies that support creativity, but keep control of the art. The partnership reflects growing interest in AI tools for filmmaking and distribution.
While AI remains a hot topic in Hollywood, A24 and Google have said that their partnership is meant to help filmmakers, not replace them.

Google is investing about $75 million in independent studio A24 as part of a new AI research partnership, according to The Wall Street Journal. Google DeepMind and A24 plan to develop tools for film production and distribution while preserving creative control. However, the multiyear deal will not give Google access to A24's film and TV library or other proprietary data.
Developers have often promoted AI as a way to make movies faster and cheaper. Many filmmakers have resisted this idea, according to A24 partner Scott Belsky. Instead, A24 believes AI should enhance creativity and encourage artistic risk-taking.
“We think there are better uses that preserve creative control and support risk-taking. The new tools won’t look anything like the prompted generation type of AI that people feel uncomfortable with,” he said, as per the Wall Street Journal, indicating that the partnership is focused on filmmaker-friendly technologies.
Meanwhile, A24 is still building on the success of Backrooms, which have strengthened its reputation for bold and original storytelling.
How Backrooms helped cement A24's status in Hollywood?
The deal comes as A24 is looking to build on the momentum of Backrooms, one of its biggest recent hits. The horror film, directed by Kane Parsons, helped the studio to turn unconventional ideas into commercial hits. Inspired by the viral internet myth, the movie follows people trapped in endless, unsettling rooms with no clear way out.

Due to its creepy ambiance and experimental style, it connected with viewers and found its own place in Hollywood. Its success once again proved the increasing power of web-born material in Hollywood. A24’s commercial reach has expanded with the recent hit and has proven that original, experimental ideas can find large audiences.
Having offbeat hits such as Backrooms, the film company is now expanding its scope with Google. Both companies believe that AI can help filmmakers in their craft without undermining the creativity of films through the development of AI-driven tools. While it is not known how this partnership will affect the production and distribution process, one thing is certain: Hollywood is more open than ever towards the idea of AI.
