Judi Dench is not fond of trigger warnings, which have become a common feature for viewers of films and theater productions. Content advisories, however, play a crucial role in alerting audiences to potentially distressing material and helping them avoid content that could pose serious health risks. These warnings may cover a range of elements, from graphic scenes to sensory effects.

However, the 91-year-old actress believes that theaters and films may be revealing too much through their trigger warnings.

Judi Dench slams trigger warnings

Judi Dench is a renowned name in the entertainment industry, having worked across theater, film, and television. In a conversation with Brendan O’Hea for her memoir, Is It Too Late to Make a Run for It?, Dench expressed concerns about content advisories in an extract published by The Times. She suggested that these warnings can reveal too much about a production, potentially stripping away the element of surprise that often pushes viewers to step outside their comfort zones and experience something unexpected.

“I think they have gone too far. It's mollycoddling. If you're that sensitive, don't go to the theater,” she said.

As reported by The Times, the actress suggested warnings such as strobe lighting, g*******, and age restrictions for children should be included. However, she also questioned how far trigger warnings should go, pointing out that almost anything, from a balloon to a clown, could potentially trigger someone. She even cited an example of Titus Andronicus, suggesting that its trigger warnings could end up being longer than the play itself.

Apart from her concerns about trigger warnings in films and theatre, Dench also expressed frustration with the questions she continues to face about her retirement.

Judi Dench has no plans for retirement

Much to her fans’ relief, Judi Dench has no plans to retire from acting anytime soon. The 91-year-old actress has an impressive filmography, with acclaimed films such as Mrs Brown, Chocolat, and Iris among her many credits. Now, speaking to The Times magazine, Dench revealed that she dislikes being asked about her retirement.

“I want to be like Newton Blick, who died in his dressing room after a performance,” she said.

So, the actress remains open to exploring new projects and continuing her work in the industry. The Pride & Prejudice actress is not even letting her diagnosis of age-related macular degeneration and the resulting vision loss stop her from pursuing her passion for acting. In her conversation with The Times, she explained that she is learning to cope with the condition much as her mother did, and that is by relying on others and pretending that she can see.

Moreover, since she can no longer read scripts, the actress is exploring alternative ways to learn her lines. And her story and desire to work will inspire many others. As for Dench’s views on trigger warnings, her comments could likely spark a debate.
