Action movies are certainly among the most entertaining genres, spanning everything from spy thrillers to superhero films. Watching a superhero soar through the sky before crashing down on an enemy with immense force can be brutal yet thrilling, while intense hand-to-hand combat can be equally awe-inspiring. Now, one industry expert, Matthew Beloni, believes Hollywood has not been making as many action movies as it used to in recent years.

That naturally raises questions about the current market for action films, especially as the viewing landscape has changed much over the past few years. And famed producer Basil Iwanyk has some insight into the current state of the action genre and more.m

Basil Iwanyk is the famed producer behind some of the most notable action films and franchises, including John Wick and The Expendables. He recently sat down with Matthew Belloni to discuss the current market for action movies. When asked whether the market is challenging for high-budget action films, the producer shared a surprising truth about which categories are currently working for the genre.

“I think the market for domestic distribution for action movies has been more challenging, but I think the market internationally and for streamers arguably is the most. It's the best. It's the gold rush for the action movies,” he said.

During his interview on The Town with Matt Belloni, Iwanyk further pointed to Netflix and Amazon Prime Video as platforms where action movies are performing well. He highlighted films such as Extraction, Carry-On, and War Machine as examples of action-heavy movies finding an audience on Netflix. Meanwhile, Amazon Prime Video has also seen success with action films such as The Beekeeper and The Accountant 2, among others. So, while audiences around the world continue to enjoy action movies on streaming platforms, the genre may be facing some hurdles in the domestic theatrical market.

Although streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are performing well with action titles, there may also be some changes specially made for the genre, as Matt Damon has previously suggested.

Before The Odyssey, Matt Damon and his longtime friend and actor Ben Affleck appeared in The Rip on Netflix, which quickly became a major success for the streaming platform. During the promotional campaign, Damon appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience and discussed how making films for Netflix differs from working on theatrical projects. He suggested that they had to repeat the movie’s plot several times while making the film.

"It wouldn’t be terrible if you reiterated the plot three or four times in the dialogue because people are on their phones while they’re watching," he said.

The comment even became a joke at the Oscars. However, Netflix later pushed back against Damon’s claim. Netflix film chief Dan Lin told Variety that the studio does not repeatedly explain the plot in its movies and laughed off the joke. While that particular debate may continue, it is certainly good news for action movies that the genre continues to perform well on streaming platforms and has a strong audience.
