Ashley Padilla reveals that her former boss, Diane Keaton, made sure she watched two of her most iconic films. The comedian and actress is now best known as a cast member of Saturday Night Live. However, before stepping into this chapter of her life, Padilla took on several jobs that taught her much about business, life, and her career.

And one of the early gigs in her career was working for Marvin’s Room actress Diane Keaton. However, at the time, Padilla had not watched some of Keaton’s most acclaimed films. That is when Keaton suggested that Padilla watch two movies that are considered among the most celebrated works of her career.

Ashley Padilla recently appeared on the podcast Good Hang with Amy Poehler, where she spoke about her early career, impressions, and much more. While discussing her time working as Diane Keaton’s personal assistant early in her career, Padilla revealed that she had only watched The Family Stone and had never seen Annie Hall or The Godfather. So, when Keaton found out, she urged Padilla to watch the two films immediately.

"She made me watch those movies she did she said you haven't seen Annie Hall you're going to go home and you're going to watch it and tell me what do you think? And I did and I watched The Godfather," she shared.

Understandably, it would have been a major miss for Padilla not to have seen these two movies, in which Keaton showed her most memorable performances. She won the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in Annie Hall, while her performance in The Godfather has also received much praise. Apart from these, she starred in many more incredible movies.

During the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast, Padilla further shared that Keaton asked her the next day what she thought of the movie. Moments like these helped shape their relationship as mentor and mentee, with Padilla learning invaluable lessons about the entertainment and film industries from Keaton. For Padilla, working for Keaton came with an unexpected opportunity to learn about movies, careers, and the entertainment business.

But what led her to become Keaton’s assistant in the first place?

Ashley Padilla was still attending improv school when she landed a one-night job at Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton’s house during a party. Her job was reportedly to hand out party favors to guests. In an interview with Vulture, Padilla shared that Keaton’s assistant later asked her if she could come back and help the following day. That was how Padilla began working for the actress, initially running errands and driving Keaton’s son, Duke Keaton. 

“I think I dropped off Christmas gifts at her friends’ houses,” Padilla said. “I would always be like, ‘I’ll do anything you guys need.’ "

She later began managing Keaton’s Instagram account, and what started as a small job eventually turned into a decade-long working relationship. As Padilla shared in her interview, Keaton also attended her performances at The Groundlings and was happy when the 33-year-old landed a job on Saturday Night Live. Over time, the two’s relationship evolved from that of boss and employee into one of mentor and mentee, and eventually, good friends.
