“Give It a Pop”: New 'American Psycho' Film Gets Approval from Christian Bale

Christian Bale as homicidal investment banker Patrick Bateman in American Psycho was intimidating, especially for his castmates. He stayed in character throughout the filming of the movie, maintaining an eerie silence and emotional detachment that unsettled those around him. Chloë Sevigny, who played his secretary Jean, later admitted that Bale’s aloof behavior made the experience challenging at times.

Yet the result was a masterpiece and an unforgettable performance by Bale. Now, 25 years later, Luca Guadagnino is all set to make a bold attempt to recreate the character of Bateman. So, as buzz around the new film grows, the legend himself, Bale, also weighed in on the project.

Christian Bale recently had a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere of his upcoming film, The Bride! During the interview, he was asked about the new American Psycho movie that Luca Guadagnino is working on. While Bale appeared to give his approval to the film, he also hinted that this would be a huge challenge.

“Whoever wants to give it a shot, give it a pop,” he said, recalling his time filming for American Psycho.

“Bold choice of anyone to try to do a — I don’t know if they’re doing a remake or what, I don’t know anything else about it. But all the best to ’em, I like brave people.”

Directed by Mary Harron, this movie is not a remake of the 2000 film. It will be based on the 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis, and the script is written by Scott Z. Burns. That is what has clearly raised the hype around the upcoming project.

However, just as Bale suggested, it was a bold choice and a challenging one, too. While the script is ready, the movie is facing the daunting task of finding an actor who will play the role of Bateman.

American Psycho struggles in its hunt for the right Patrick Bateman

Christian Bale set the bar incredibly high with playing the complicated role of Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. His performance had everyone wondering who could step up to take on the role next. It appears that this is exactly where the film’s producers and director might be struggling.

Bret Easton Ellis, author of the novel on which the film is based, revealed on his podcast that several big names have passed on the opportunity.

“A couple of high profile actors, whom I can’t name, have turned it down,” he said. “I think maybe because they don’t want to be in the shoes of Christian Bale.”

He also shared that screenwriter Scott Z. Burns has rewritten the script following multiple rejections. However, the film is still searching for the right actor who can bring Patrick Bateman to life once again. So while the producers and director continue their hunt for someone willing to take the reins, they can at least take comfort in knowing they have Bale’s approval.
