Gina Carano’s career has taken a very different path since walking away from The Mandalorian in 2021. Once celebrated as both an MMA trailblazer and one of Star Wars’ breakout action stars through Cara Dune, Carano never fully stepped away from either Hollywood or combat sports, continuing to build her presence through independent action films, streaming projects, and now a brutal return to the MMA arena. However, over the past few years, the actress-fighter’s career steadily drifted far from the blockbuster franchise spotlight that once made her one of the galaxy’s fastest-rising faces.

As Carano prepares for one of the biggest fights of her career against Ronda Rousey, here is a closer look at the very different road she travelled after exiting The Mandalorian universe.

Gina Carano’s journey inside The Mandalorian came to an abrupt halt in 2021 after controversial social media posts sparked major backlash online. Shortly afterward, Lucasfilm officially announced it was no longer working with the actress, effectively ending her role as Cara Dune inside the Star Wars universe.

However, rather than disappearing completely, Carano gradually rebuilt her career through smaller-scale action films and politically aligned productions outside the blockbuster studio system, including Terror on the Prairie (2022). The actress later appeared in My Son Hunter (2022), another politically themed project that further shifted her career away from mainstream franchise filmmaking.

However, one of the biggest developments in Carano’s post-Disney career has now become her return to mixed martial arts. Nearly five years after her firing, Carano announced a comeback fight against Ronda Rousey, pulling her back toward the combat world that originally made her famous. While these projects kept Carano active onscreen, they also pushed her far outside the blockbuster galaxy she once occupied through Star Wars.

Outside MMA, the actress has continued working across independent and streaming-focused productions, while also landing a lead role in Logan Reign, marking one of her most notable television projects since leaving The Mandalorian universe.

The former MMA pioneer also successfully crossed into blockbuster Hollywood earlier through Fast & Furious 6 (2013), where she starred alongside Dwayne Johnson, and Deadpool (2016), where she played Angel Dust opposite Ryan Reynolds. Carano also earned strong critical praise for Haywire (2011), a performance that helped cement her transition from the “Face of Women’s MMA” into a recognised Hollywood action star.
