Ryan Gosling is the second Ghost Rider in the MCU. Gabriel Luna previously played another Ghost Rider, Robbie Reyes, on Season 4 of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. As for Johnny Blaze, he has not appeared on the small screen or big screen since Nicolas Cage starred in 2011’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Cage is currently the lead in Sony’s Spider-Man Noir series, and Marvel is expected to cast a new actor as Johnny Blaze, with Gosling being a popular choice.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed during the event that fans have been asking for years when Ghost Rider will be joining the MCU and if Ryan Gosling will be taking on the role. Then he brought out Gosling onto the Hall H stage, where the actor said he had always wanted to play Ghost Rider. Gosling also said that that he thought there was only one filmmaker who could do the character justice before introducing director Shawn Levy, confirming that the Deadpool & Wolverine filmmaker would be at the helm of the project.
With Ghost Rider finally making his way into the MCU, here is a closer look at the iconic comic book character Ryan Gosling is expected to bring to life.
Johnny Blaze's origin story explained
Johnny Blaze is the best-known Ghost Rider in Marvel Comics. Motorcycle stuntman Blaze sells his own soul to demon Mephisto in an effort to save his surrogate father, not knowing what he is getting himself into. As part of the bargain, he becomes bound to the powerful Spirit of Vengeance, Zarathos. The transformation gives Blaze the look of a supernatural antihero with a flaming skull, hellfire powers, and a cursed fate that forces him to fight evil while trying to control his demonic alter ego.
