While his influence on cinema remains undeniable, fans continue to be fascinated by the projects and creative worlds that capture his attention today.

Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri recently revealed that Lucas will appear in Minions & Monsters, the upcoming installment in the Minions franchise. According to Meledandri, the opportunity emerged after he learned just how passionate Lucas was about Illumination's films, particularly the mischievous yellow characters that have become global favorites.

“I had this privilege of meeting George about two years ago, and what led to my meeting him is how much he loves Illumination movies, and specifically Despicable Me, and even more specifically, the Minions,” Meledandri told Collider’s Steve Weintraub on Friday.

Chris Meledandri went on to explain Collider that this admiration eventually led to conversations about bringing Lucas into the upcoming film in a role created specifically for the story. The filmmaker reportedly agreed to participate almost immediately when the idea for a role was presented to him. The appearance marks Lucas' first big-screen acting role since his brief cameo in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. While the details of his character remain under wraps, the casting reflects his genuine affection for the franchise.

Beyond his surprising new role, Lucas' career nearly took a very different turn decades ago through an alternate vision for the Star Wars saga.

The low-budget Star Wars sequel plan that never became reality

Before Star Wars became a cultural phenomenon, George Lucas and his collaborators considered a backup plan in case the original film failed to meet expectations. That contingency project was known as Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, a smaller-scale story designed as a cost-effective sequel. The plot would have followed Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia on the mist-covered planet Mimban, where they would be hunted by Darth Vader in a tense survival-focused adventure.

Unlike the sprawling galactic battles that later defined the franchise, the story emphasized atmosphere, suspense, and a limited cast. However, the massive success of Star Wars: A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back eliminated the need for the fallback project. The concept eventually lived on as a novel by Alan Dean Foster and later a comic adaptation, offering fans a glimpse into an alternate version of the galaxy far, far away.
