The small gesture stood out against the elaborate machinery of a major festival, particularly for a star whose public image has long been built around effortless movie-star cool.

The honor itself marks a remarkable full-circle moment for Clooney. The Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement recognizes his contribution to cinema across an acting and filmmaking career that has stretched from his breakthrough on ER to major screen roles in Ocean’s Eleven, Michael Clayton, Up in the Air and The Descendants. He has also carved out a formidable second act behind the camera, directing films such as Good Night, and Good Luck, The Ides of March, The Monuments Men and The Boys in the Boat.

Last year, Clooney was in Venice for a story, Jay Kelly, a movie that carried its own sense of cinematic occasion, but this time,he is the one being celebrated with Amal Cloooney on his side, as the festival itself is placing him at the center of the frame.

Yet a lifetime achievement award can carry an inevitable question with it: does this kind of honor signal the beginning of the end?

The answer appears to be no, although George Clooney is clearly reshaping what the next chapter of his career looks like. At 65, he is not walking away from acting, although he is making a decision to step back from directing. His career has reached the point where the choices are no longer simply about chasing the next project, but about deciding which projects are worth the time they require.

Clooney recently explained that directing a movie can take him away for roughly a year, while acting generally keeps him away for around three months. With his twins, Alexander and Ella, now nine years old, that difference has become decisive. He has said that he loves directing and has had great experiences doing it, but he cannot continue pulling his children out of school for productions. 

“The only reason I’m not directing, which I love doing, is because I had two 9-year-old kids,” Clooney explained, according to PEOPLE.

And there is still plenty of screen life ahead. Clooney is expected to return as Danny Ocean in Ocean’s 14, reuniting with Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts and Don Cheadle, proving that the Golden Lion is hardly a closing credit.
