Gary Oldman believes the upcoming Harry Potter series will feel more satisfying than the original films because it finally has room to restore what the movies left behind. The actor spent years inside the Wizarding World, watching character moments quietly disappear to fit a strict runtime. With a new format waiting in the wings, that old frustration finally seems ready to find its resolution. Oldman sounds genuinely hopeful about what viewers might finally get to see.

Ahead lie the very words Oldman used to describe this shift and the reasoning behind his rare on-record optimism.

The wizarding world is finally getting a version told in full, and Gary Oldman says that shift in the Harry Potter series changes everything. For years, the films squeezed detailed subplots and quieter character beats into one theatrical runtime, cutting corners the books never asked for. Television removes that ceiling, giving Hogwarts room to breathe scene by scene.

"I believe [the TV series is] gonna do it pretty much word-for-word," Oldman told Entertainment Weekly during the Toronto International Film Festival.

He then added, "I think, as a viewer, would be more satisfying."

During the same Entertainment Weekly conversation, the actor admitted a lot of character detail was sacrificed just to fit the films inside their two and a half hour window. He credited Chris Columbus for shaping the franchise early and building a cast that grew into its roles. He also revealed that he still signs old Sirius Black photographs, even though he rarely looks back on that chapter of his career. The new series premieres on HBO and HBO Max this Christmas.

Idris Elba recently closed the door on his own name being linked to the role, calling the long-running rumors never legitimate. Rory Kinnear has suggested some familiar faces from the Daniel Craig era could still return for continuity, even as the franchise shifts under new creative direction. Casting expert Debbie McWilliams has warned that Bond must remain a total enigma to audiences. Between an unannounced Bond and a fully restored Harry Potter, Oldman is having quite the year.
