'Game of Thrones' Universe Keeps Growing as ‘Aegon’s Conquest’ Script Takes a Big Step Forward

After the original Game of Thrones ended in 2019, a lineup of prequels and sequels was promised to keep the world of Westeros alive. That promise began with House of the Dragon, which brought audiences back to Westeros in a big way. Now, this year continues that with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, as well as an update on one of the most talked about prequels, Aegon's Conquest.

The Batman writer Mattson Tomlin was given the reins to write the Game of Thrones prequel Aegon’s Conquest. Back in August 2025, he hinted that a large portion of the script had already been completed. Now, he has shared another update on his progress by posting an image of notebooks labeled “Conquest/Possessor/16 Bars/The Crew” and “Conquest/Caine 24/25” on X.
“Always satisfying to finish filling a notebook,” he wrote in the caption. Considering HBO’s steady push to expand the Game of Thrones universe with new spinoffs, the project could move into production soon, although no official dates have been announced yet.
As for those who are unaware, Aegon’s Conquest will tell the story of Aegon I Targaryen’s invasion of Westeros alongside his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, and their three dragons. The events take place nearly 300 years before Game of Thrones. Until more updates about the series arrive, fans can keep themselves busy with the weekly episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
As spin-offs of Game of Thrones are coming in left and right, the third season of House of the Dragon is also set to return this year.
Release date of House of the Dragon season 3
The first season of House of the Dragon came to light on August 21, 2022, which was followed by its second season in 2024. After a 2 year gap, the third season of House of the Dragon is set to arrive in the summer of this year. However, a release date for the series has not been confirmed.

Unlike Game of Thrones, which ran for eight seasons, House of the Dragon has a clear endpoint. Showrunner Ryan Condal has confirmed the series is planned for four seasons, with another installment expected after the upcoming third season arrives this year.
So, clearly, new seasons and spin-offs are already in full swing to expand the Game of Thrones universe. Until then, all eyes will be on the progress of the franchise’s next big chapter.
