In just a few years, Game of Thrones has spread its roots beyond the original television series, bringing forth more intriguing stories from the rich history of Westeros. This epic brainchild of writer George R.R. Martin has several tales hidden inside this one chronicle. Some of these tales, like House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, have found the same love and acclaim as their precursor once did.

Now, riding on the success of these two new additions to the Game of Thrones family, HBO has announced that a new prequel movie is on the cards.

According to Page Six Hollywood, Warner Bros. is planning a Game of Thrones movie, the script for which is going to be written by House of Cards showrunner and Andor writer Beau Willimon. Reportedly, Willimon has already handed in an initial script for the film, which is going to be based on Aegon I Targaryen.

The legendary king Aegon Targaryen is the genesis point of the main story. Everything started with his conquest approximately 300 years ago, when he stormed Westeros riding on his dragon Balerion, the Black Dread. He was aided by his sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys, who helped him unite the six out of the seven kingdoms.

The legend of Aegon I Targaryen is pretty massive to be in a feature film, and hence, it would be a huge undertaking for the writer. The story that gave birth to all the other stories of the franchise must be presented in the grandest and most immersive way possible. A tremendous pressure on the makers, but at the same time, a joyous moment for the GOT fans.

The joy, however, has a shadow of uncertainty to it, and it has something to do with the fate of several undertakings in the franchise.

The hiccup in the project

Naturally, a number of things will determine whether or not the new Game of Thrones film is released. First, not every project from the GOT universe that is put into development is approved. Before choosing to create House of the Dragon and ultimately A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, HBO worked with Martin on a number of spinoffs that did not work.

The project's future is shaky, despite Warner Bros. leadership's enthusiasm for the draft. There is disagreement among insiders over how Paramount Skydance's acquisition of the studio will affect the present schedule. There is a lot of skepticism in the Warner Bros. camp itself, but the general sentiment indicates that the fate of the project rests on the autonomy the studio maintains after the merger.

The Game of Thrones universe is surely expanding with this latest prospect, but its fruition is something that is worrying everyone. The developments so far look promising, and the inclusion of Beau Willimon sort of gives fans an assurance that the studio is seriously thinking about bringing this project to screens.
