For most, a great superhero movie is all about a likeable superhero, an overpowered villain, and a lot of exhilarating action set pieces. But what elevates the whole experience to another level is a perfect needle drop at the right moment. A masterfully performed musical crescendo with a catchy song is the only thing that can make a scene even more epic when the stakes are high, the chips are down, the suspense is rising, and the heroes are ready to get their hands dirty. 

Generally, there are enough examples of out-and-out needle drops across Marvel and DC, but here are the top 10 musical moments in superhero movies that have the deepest impact of them all.  

Tame Impala might just be on the meanest lucky streak possible. Not too long ago, his single ‘Dracula’ took over the internet after the release of its remix with Jennie. And now, his 2025 single, ‘Loser’ from his 2025 album ‘Deadbeat,' found a second wind after featuring in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. 

The song is steadily finding new takers on Spotify, and all the credit goes to the brilliant placement of the song in the movie. The song’s lyrics, which include themes of crisis and personal reflection, resonated with viewers, as they perfectly complemented Peter’s identity crisis in the scene.

If anyone could have given this ridiculously hilarious multiversal flick a touch of gravitas, it was Madonna. In 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine, the iconic singer's 'Like a Prayer' becomes a recurrent musical motif, appearing in different renditions in multiple settings. During the pivotal confrontation between Deadpool and Wolverine and a horde of Deadpool variants from different realities, a catchy, well-known version of the song plays.

Later in the third act, when Wade and Logan bravely give their lives to rescue the multiverse, it reappears. But this time, a choir is performing a brand-new version of the song. The kind of antics and absurdity that viewers anticipated from Deadpool's MCU debut becomes apparent with this.

Led Zeppelin's 'Immigrant Song' appears twice in Thor: Ragnarok. The first time is in the opening scene, where Thor fights Surtur's army in Muspelheim. The song really comes to life in its second appearance. It reappears in the epic bridge battle between the forces of Hela and Thor, who has recently learned to channel lightning through his body instead of his hammer, Mjolnir. As Thor easily defeats Hela's army, this is the ideal opportunity to introduce his enhanced form.

James Gunn might just be the King of needle drops, as evidenced by the plethora of examples of brilliantly placed classics throughout his films. This, however, is the most fun needle drop of them all, and the way it sets the mood for the entire film is absolutely masterful. Peter Quill, aka Star Lord, dances to Redbone's 'Come and Get Your Love' as he explores a ruined chamber in search of the hidden Power Stone. 

Chris Pratt's absurdly entertaining dance moves set the tone for a trilogy that would be remembered for its nostalgic soundtracks and laughs, and this scene remains one of the most iconic in the entire MCU, even making a comeback five years later in Avengers: Endgame.   

Arguably the best needle drops in not just the history of superhero movies but cinema in general. The iconic 1991 track, 'Something in the Way' by Nirvana, does not just elevate a particular scene or a mood; it gives the movie its soul and becomes the theme of the brooding hero of Gotham. 

At the beginning of the movie, Batman sets the mood of darkness, but at the end, he is a ray of hope that Gotham City has something to do with the people who are endangering its residents. It stands out from other needle drops on this list because Matt Reeves cleverly uses the same song twice in the same film for distinctly different ends, which has an unparalleled impact.

After successfully thwarting Lex Luthor's scheme to destroy him, Clark Kent returns to the Fortress of Solitude in the final moments of Superman. His "Superman Robots" play calming pictures and videos of his parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent, while he snoozes in his special chair.

The Teddybears' 'Punkrocker' with Iggy Pop plays as the credits roll. The choice of song could not have been better, and it quickly came to be associated with James Gunn's revival of the legendary superhero.

When the remaining Guardians are on the verge of death, Quill uses his godlike abilities to vanquish his father, Ego, accounting for a heroic save. The other scene, in which Quill sees a photo of his father and the group departs Nebulla, is mirrored in this second use of Fleetwood Mac's 'The Chain.' But this is a much more epic, poignant, and powerful moment that both remembers his mother and serves to uphold his friends' morals. This needle drop sequence is not only intriguing, but it also stands out in the movie due to its significance and weight.

One of the most iconic scenes from the critically praised animated movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is when Miles Morales takes the "Leap of Faith" and ultimately settles into his role as Spider-Man. 'What's Up Danger' by Blackway & Black Caviar plays in the background as he swings through the city in his new suit.

The song is now more than just a famous needle drop in a fantastic film. These days, it is almost Miles Morales's theme song, appearing in multiple character edits.

'Back in Black' was essentially the pioneer for the MCU in this category. Although the majority of casual fans are more likely to associate Iron Man with another AC/DC song, Shoot to Thrill, the MCU began with this 1980 hit. In the opening scene of Iron Man (2008), 'Back in Black' plays as Tony Stark travels with a convoy of US Marines to a weapons show in the desert, a trip that would forever alter his life.

The way Sam Raimi just casually threw People Get Up and Drive Your Funky Soul' to boost up the antics of an overly confident symbiote-infected Peter made the whole scene a legendary pop culture reference. Images of Tobey Maguire clumsily dancing in the street and firing his goofy finger guns at strangers are immediately conjured up by a simple cue from James Brown's song.
