When Tom Holland swung into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: Civil War, nobody knew that the teenage-looking newcomer was about to become one of Hollywood's most bankable superheroes, where he would eventually bag a $20 million worth paycheck. Nearly a decade later, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has become a full-blown box-office monster, opening to $360 million domestically and crossing the $1 billion mark within its first week, proving that the Spider-Man phenomenon still has plenty of web left in it.

But Holland's journey is arguably just as fascinating as Peter Parker's transformation. So, how exactly did a young British actor go from Marvel's fresh-faced experiment to one of its most expensive stars?

Tom Holland's initial Spider-Man deal came at a very different stage of his career. When he appeared opposite Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. in Captain America: Civil War in 2016, he was essentially being introduced to the world as Marvel's new Peter Parker. His reported $250,000 paycheck reflected that status.

From there, the numbers started climbing almost as quickly as Spidey himself:

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017): Reported $500,000 base, rising to around $1.5 million with bonuses.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018): Reported $3 million.

Avengers: Endgame (2019): Reported $3 million.

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019): Reported $4 million.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021): Reported around $10 million.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026): Reported estimates range from $15 million to $20 million, with $20 million frequently cited.

The important caveat is that Hollywood contracts are rarely completely transparent, so these figures should be treated as reported estimates rather than studio-confirmed salary disclosures. Still, the trajectory is impossible to miss. Holland's reported Brand New Day compensation is roughly 80 times his reported Civil War payday. The kid who once needed Tony Stark's approval is now commanding the kind of paycheck that makes Hollywood accountants reach for the calculator.

The question now is whether Holland's progressively fattening paycheck is going to keep being sourced from Marvel, or some place else. 

For years, the question was whether Tom Holland would continue after Spider-Man: No Way Home. Now that Spider-Man: Brand New Day has landed like another billion-dollar wrecking ball, the bigger question is whether Marvel and Sony can really afford to let their most reliable superhero walk away. There is no officially confirmed Spider-Man 5 yet, but the door is very much open. Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman recently said the studio does not know whether Holland will return for a fifth film, while making it clear that Sony would very much like him to continue. 

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has also signalled that Brand New Day is not simply another lap around familiar territory. Speaking about the film, Feige praised director Destin Daniel Cretton for taking Spider-Man in a new direction, while Cretton has described the story as being deeply focused on Peter's emotional need for human connection. Peter Parker is no longer the nervous teenager trying to balance homework with saving Queens. Brand New Day positions him as an adult Spider-Man, alone, emotionally scarred and completely devoted to protecting New York.

For now, Tom Holland has done what very few actors ever manage: he grew up inside a billion-dollar franchise and watched his paycheck grow with him. From the kid hiding beneath Captain America's shield to the face of one of Hollywood's most dependable theatrical brands, Holland's Spider-Man era has become one of Marvel's most lucrative casting bets.
