Halloween is Hollywood’s annual invitation to abandon good taste, embrace theatrical excess, and turn the streets into a living pop-culture museum. From Heidi Klum disappearing beneath layers of prosthetics to celebrities recreating beloved characters with almost obsessive precision, the season rewards those willing to go all in. But when a costume borrows from real-life tragedies, sensitive controversies, or another celebrity’s personal life, the punchline can quickly turn sour.
There is a fine line between a memorable Halloween transformation and a look that sends the internet into a full-blown courtroom debate. These 14 celebrity costumes crossed that line in different ways, attracting criticism, awkward explanations, and even responses from the people they referenced.
1. Julia Fox turned Jackie Kennedy’s assassination outfit
In 2025, Julia Fox arrived at a Halloween party wearing a blood-spattered recreation of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’s famous pink suit from the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Fox described the look as a statement about the former first lady’s courage and refusal to change her bloodstained clothes. However, the visual reference to one of American history’s most traumatic moments struck many people as deeply inappropriate.
Jack Schlossberg, Kennedy’s grandson, condemned the costume, calling it a disturbing glorification of political violence.
And if Fox’s look demonstrated how a costume can collide with history, these other celebrity controversies showed that even fictional characters could become a problem when Hollywood was fighting for its workers.
2. Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly
The 2023 Halloween celebrations took an awkward turn for Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly when their costumes landed them in the middle of Hollywood’s ongoing labor dispute. The couple dressed as Gogo Yubari and the Bride from Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill, recreating two recognizable characters from the 2003 action thriller while SAG-AFTRA members were still striking against major studios.

Fox added another twist by tagging SAG-AFTRA in her social media post, seemingly drawing attention to the union’s warning. Her move did not go down well with everyone, particularly Abbott Elementary star Lisa Ann Walter, who criticized the couple for disregarding the guidelines while fellow performers were fighting for fair contracts., as per Buzzfeed.
3. North West’s Natalie Nunn costume
North West brought reality television into Halloween 2026 by recreating Baddies star Natalie Nunn’s signature look. The 13-year-old wore a black bob, dramatic makeup, a sparkling “CEO Baddies” chain, and a prosthetic chin that drew particular attention.

Some social media users questioned whether the exaggerated feature crossed into mockery, although Nunn herself embraced the tribute and promised to send North a real Baddies chain.
4. Rachel Matthews dressed as Katy Perry
Rachel Matthews found herself at the center of an internet-fueled relationship rumor after dressing as Katy Perry for Halloween in 2025. The Happy Death Day actor recreated Perry’s blue spacesuit from her Blue Origin flight and happened to pose for a photograph with Perry’s former fiancé, Orlando Bloom. Matthews shared the picture online, but social media users quickly spun the coincidence into speculation about Bloom’s romantic life.
5. Kayla Nicole’s Toni Braxton look
Kayla Nicole recreated Toni Braxton’s silver outfit and choreography from the 2000 music video for 'He Wasn’t Man Enough' in 2025. Because Nicole previously dated Travis Kelce, fans interpreted the song’s lyrics about a former partner’s new relationship as a pointed message to Kelce and Taylor Swift. Nicole denied targeting either of them, explaining that the costume was inspired by a childhood memory involving a friend named Taylor.
6. Lily Allen dressed as Dr. Luke
Lily Allen made a pointed pop-culture reference in 2014 by arriving at Kate Hudson’s Halloween party dressed as a gynecologist named Dr. Luke. The costume referenced producer Lukasz Gottwald, known professionally as Dr. Luke, who was facing s***** assault allegations from Kesha at the time. Gottwald denied the allegations, and the pair eventually settled their legal dispute in 2023.
7. Julianne Hough’s blackface version of Crazy Eyes
In 2013, Julianne Hough dressed as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren, the character played by Uzo Aduba in Orange Is the New Black. The actor wore an orange prison-style outfit, styled her hair to resemble the character, and darkened her skin. The blackface element sparked immediate criticism, prompting Hough to apologize publicly and acknowledge that the costume had hurt and offended people. Aduba later described the incident as unfortunate and said Hough had apologized.
8. Shaun White
Olympic snowboarder Shaun White faced backlash in 2018 after sharing a photograph of himself dressed as Simple Jack from Tropic Thunder. The character, played by Ben Stiller, has an intellectual disability, and disability advocates criticized the costume for turning that portrayal into a Halloween joke.
The Special Olympics publicly expressed disappointment, prompting White to delete the image and apologize. He called the decision wrong and acknowledged that the organization was right to call him out.
9. Kylie Jenner recreated Elvira
Kylie Jenner’s 2022 Halloween transformation into Elvira, the Mistress of the Dark, was a remarkably faithful recreation of the horror icon’s signature look. From the towering black hair and dramatic smoky makeup to the plunging black outfit, Jenner captured the campy, gothic glamour that Cassandra Peterson had made synonymous with the character. The reality star’s tribute was convincing enough to catch Peterson’s attention, although the original Mistress of the Dark had one small request.

Peterson, the actor behind Elvira, pointed out that Jenner had forgotten to tag her when sharing the costume. While she considered the recreation flattering, Peterson suggested that receiving credit would have made the homage even better. The lighthearted remark turned what appeared to be a picture-perfect Halloween tribute into an unexpected celebrity callout.
10. Lil Nas X’s Nicki Minaj
Lil Nas X paid tribute to Nicki Minaj in 2020 by recreating her pink, leopard-print look from the “Super Bass” music video. The rapper’s transformation drew homophobic comments, including a slur from fellow rapper Dave East. Lil Nas X responded by correcting East’s misspelling of the offensive term, while 50 Cent also weighed in with a mocking post. What began as a playful celebration of a pop idol became another public reminder of the hostility queer artists can face.
11. Nina Dobrev’s Bride of Chucky
Nina Dobrev dressed as Tiffany Valentine, the Bride of Chucky, for Halloween in 2025, posing with a Chucky doll. Fans quickly connected the horror-inspired look to her recent split from former fiancé Shaun White and speculated that the costume was a dig at him. Dobrev did not confirm that interpretation, and her friend Erica Barstein was also part of the matching costume idea. Still, the timing gave fans plenty of material for their own theories.
12. Khloé Kardashian
Not every questionable costume starts a feud. In 2021, Khloé Kardashian revealed that her daughter, True, wanted to dress as Moana and have her mother play Pua, the pig. Kardashian joked that the choice was a little shady but happily agreed to the role.
13. Kristen Bell as Elsa instead of Anna
Kristen Bell voiced Anna in Disney’s Frozen, but her daughter wanted both of them to dress as Elsa for Halloween in 2017. Bell shared a photograph of herself in the blue princess outfit, joking that she had to grin and bear the decision. The costume was hardly controversial, but the family joke made it a memorable celebrity Halloween moment.
14. JADE and boyfriend Jordan Stephens
Little Mix singer JADE chose Little Bo Peep for Halloween in 2024 and assigned her then-partner, Jordan Stephens, the role of Mr. Potato Head. She later explained on Late Night with Seth Meyers that Stephens was not thrilled about being her costume accomplice. His reluctant participation made the pairing a funny relationship anecdote rather than a genuine celebrity feud.
Halloween costumes are supposed to invite a little mischief, but these examples show how quickly a joke can become a headline.
