Robert Downey Jr.’s son, Indio Downey, is stepping into the spotlight with his first leading role in a feature film, Love in Vein. While having an Oscar-winning father and an Iron Man-sized Hollywood legacy might seem like the ultimate head start, the younger Downey is now getting the opportunity to carve out a name for himself on screen. And unlike his father’s superhero adventures, this new project promises a much grittier journey.
Hollywood has no shortage of celebrity offspring trying their luck in the family business, but Indio has largely kept his acting career under wraps while pursuing music. His latest project, however, puts him right at the center of an independent drama exploring addiction, love, and self-destruction.
The film also brings together an experienced creative team, including a producer whose past work features some memorable independent cinema. So, while the Downey surname might grab the headlines, there is plenty more to this project than a famous family connection.

Indio Downey takes the lead in Love in Vein
Written and directed by Will De Los Santos, Love in Vein is adapted from the late Ryan Leone’s novel Wasting Talent. Indio Downey will play Damien, a musician navigating addiction, complicated relationships, and self-destructive behavior against the backdrop of Los Angeles’s underground scene, as Deadline has reported.
The story explores the fragile intersection of drugs, desire, survival, and the search for connection. De Los Santos, who previously co-wrote and produced the cult film Spun, has described the source material as an uncompromising account of addiction and love. The filmmaker intends to preserve the novel’s rawness rather than soften its difficult themes.

The production comes from Muse Productions in association with ArtHouse Gooning, with Chris Hanley producing alongside Orson Oblowitz, Tricia van Klaveren, and Ben D. Wallace. Hanley, whose credits include American Psycho, previously worked with Robert Downey Jr. on Two Girls and a Guy. He has praised Indio’s vulnerability and authenticity, qualities that could prove essential for a character wrestling with such emotionally demanding circumstances.
"Indio brings exactly the vulnerability and authenticity this role needs,” said Hanley, as reported by Deadline. Principal photography is scheduled to take place in Los Angeles in March and April 2027, with additional casting underway.
And while this marks a significant milestone for Indio, the aspiring actor is not exactly arriving in Hollywood without any prior screen experience.
Indio Downey is not new to world of movies
Indio Downey made his acting debut in 2005’s Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, appearing as the younger version of his father’s character, Harry Lockhart. However, rather than immediately following his father into blockbuster territory, he gradually gravitated toward music, becoming a singer-songwriter and performing with bands including The Dose and Indio Ink.
His creative pursuits have also intersected with his father’s work. Indio contributed the song 'Gone' to Sr., the 2022 documentary about Robert Downey Sr., which featured the younger Downey’s musical talents.

He has since appeared in Outcome, the 2026 film starring Keanu Reeves, marking another screen credit before taking on Love in Vein. As his father gears up for his comeback in Marvel as Doctor Doom, with Love in Vein, Indio now has the chance to move beyond brief appearances and prove he can carry a feature film. Whether he inherits his father’s blockbuster charisma or establishes a distinctly different screen presence, this next chapter could be his most interesting role yet.
