Following Historic Box Office Run, Kane Parsons Ready to Expand the 'Backrooms' Universe

A24 has once again tapped Kane Parsons for a Backrooms sequel. What began as a low-fi viral phenomenon on the internet has officially morphed into one of the most staggering box office anomalies in A24’s history. With the studio's cinematic adaptation of Backrooms creeping into theaters earlier this year, audiences turned out in droves to experience the deeply unsettling, labyrinthine nightmare of endless yellow hallways - proving that modern horror surprises can still shatter expectations and rewrite studio record books.
Now, A24 is once again bringing Kane Parsons back to build on the success of the creepypasta movie with a sequel.
Kane Parsons returning to direct Backrooms sequel
Kane Parsons has officially agreed to direct Backrooms 2 for A24, according to a Dread Central exclusive. A formal announcement is reportedly on the horizon. According to reports, the sequel will be his next endeavor, so he will not be taking a detour before going back to the world that made him famous.
The decision to go with a follow-up to the movie is not really surprising in light of the huge box office success of the first film. With an estimated production budget of less than $10 million, Backrooms made $394.1 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film in A24's history and the largest domestic opening ever for an original horror movie.

It is interesting to note that Parsons was working on a different original idea with mentor Oz Perkins, who also produced Backrooms and directed Longlegs. According to the Dread Central exclusive, Parsons has placed that project on hold while he concentrates on leveraging the success of his creepypasta epic.
The decision for a sequel might at first seem influenced solely by the massive commercial success of the first, but according to the director, the movie always had the potential for multiple sequels.
Kane Parsons on expanding the labyrinth
Kane Parsons has already discussed potential future directions for the franchise. Speaking about Backrooms' future in light of the movie's popularity in a May 29 Variety interview, he clarified that the plot was never supposed to be contained in a single film.
"Backrooms has always been planned to be more of a series that goes outside the confines of this film," he had said when he was asked how he was thinking of continuing the story.

Many plot points from the original movie, which will soon hit digital streaming, were left open for a follow-up. By integrating Async, the enigmatic institution researching the phenomenon, directly into the feature's plot, it broadened the lore beyond the endless yellow halls viewers were familiar with from the web series and created several avenues for future development.
