First Looks for Charlie Heaton’s Upcoming Australian Rom-Com With Mia Wasikowska: Check Deets
Charlie Heaton’s rise after Stranger Things has been steady, strategic, and quietly impressive. Heaton cleverly leveraged the global success of Netflix’s sci-fi juggernaut into a slate of more considered projects. Among those post-Stranger Things choices is a romantic drama opposite acclaimed indie thespian Mia Wasikowska, a pairing that seemed ambitious. First announced in late 2025, the project has now reached a defining moment, stepping out of the shadows and into view. And the first glimpse? It is arresting.
The newly unveiled image leans into stillness, intimacy, and emotional weight, suggesting a romance that simmers rather than explodes.

As exclusively revealed by Deadline, the first look from Twice Over captures Charlie Heaton and Mia Wasikowska in bed, sharing a moment that feels both tender and loaded. The image places them in a dimly lit, almost solemn atmosphere as the pair read a letter together. A visual cue that words, memory, and unspoken truths will drive the story forward.
Twice Over stars Heaton and Wasikowska as lovers and is directed by Russian-born Australian filmmaker Alena Lodkina, known for her acclaimed work Petrol (2022), Strange Colors (2017) and There Is No Such Thing as a Jellyfish (2014). She brings a reputation for introspective, character-driven cinema. While the first look for her upcoming project came out, Lodkina praised her leads in a statement with Deadline.
“Every day on set with Mia and Charlie was full of discovery. They are remarkable actors and I consider it a great fortune to have had the experience of working with them and listening to their instincts. It was truly a joy,” Lodkina said.
Even though the core cast has been locked since October 2025, the film’s plot has largely remained under wraps. What has been confirmed is where and how this story came together.
Inside Twice Over
The film follows an unexpected reconnection between two people, setting off a quiet reckoning with past feelings, lost time, and the possibility of reinvention. The production of Twice Over unfolded entirely in Fremantle, Australia, using the port city’s textured landscape as its sole backdrop. Following principal photography, the film moved into post-production in Poland, where the process is being handled by Madants.

The film brings together an international group of executive producers, including Klaudia Smieja, Lenkiewicz, Samantha Lang, Lee Hazeldene, Natalie Coleman, Stais and Giorgos Karnavas. Alena Lodkina co-wrote the screenplay with Miles Allinson, while Athens-based Heretic is handling international sales, pre-selling the title at the European Film Market next month.
With its restrained first look and heavyweight indie credentials, Twice Over is shaping up to be one of Charlie Heaton’s most intriguing post-Stranger Things choices yet.
