Jumanji has turned the tables, bringing the wilderness of the jungle right into the city. The beloved adventure-comedy franchise is back with its newest installment, Jumanji: Open World. This is the fifth film in the long-running series and the finale of its modern trilogy. 

Familiar favorites Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, and several returning cast members are joined by new faces for this one last action-packed adventure. The first trailer of the film is finally here. And the chaos is certainly more than ever before, with stampeding hippopotamuses and towering creatures across the street. 

Sony Pictures has finally released the first trailer for Jumanji: Open World, revealing the plot of the upcoming movie. The final installment in the modern trilogy will see the video game characters step out of their console and into the real world. Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan are all returning to reprise their iconic roles. 

Interestingly, the characters are stuck in their demo mode, complete with their hilarious flaws and glitches. One such instance is Dwayne Johnson's character, Dr. Smolder Bravestone, speaking with a Spanish accent. An awkward running style and hilarious language mistakes can be seen throughout the trailer. While the characters must overcome these hilarious flaws, they also have to face the chaos unleashed across the city, with giraffes and ostriches roaming the streets.

Director Jake Kasdan, who directed the previous two movies, also returned for the final trilogy. Nick Jonas, Alex Wolff, Morgan Turner, Ser'Darius Blain, Madison Iseman, Rhys Darby, and Danny DeVito are also set to return. Following its earlier announcement this year, the movie has now been officially slated for release on December 25, 2026. With a refreshing new twist on the Jumanji adventure, expectations for the film are already high.

After all, the upcoming movie now faces the pressure of matching its predecessors at the box office.

The first film in the modern trilogy, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, was released in 2017. The story, which followed a group of teenagers trapped inside a video game, grossed over $950 million at the global box office. Its success was followed by another blockbuster with the 2019 sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level. 

The sequel was also a massive hit, earning more than $801 million worldwide. Together, the two films successfully revived the franchise, which began with the 1995 classic Jumanji, starring Robin Williams and based on Chris Van Allsburg's novel. It was later followed by the standalone sequel Zathura: A Space Adventure, whic  also based on the books. While the two modern films have set a high bar for the franchise, can Jumanji: Open World match their success or even surpass it?
