‘Fire Country’ Will Exit Friday Nights Early Next Season as CBS Cuts Episode Orders for Multiple Shows
CBS is officially cutting episode counts for several of its returning shows next season, a move that will see Fire Country exit its Friday night lineup earlier than usual. The network has reduced orders for multiple series, reshaping its schedule as it prepares to introduce a wave of new dramas and comedies. The decision reflects CBS’s broader strategy to maintain its long-standing dominance on Friday nights, where it has ranked No. 1 for 16 straight seasons, by expanding its slate rather than extending existing shows.
That approach, however, means shorter seasons for some of its most popular titles, setting the stage for a noticeable shift in viewing patterns.

One of the biggest shakeups involves Fire Country, which will wrap its fifth season earlier than usual. The series is set to receive a 13-episode order, significantly down from its previous 20-episode run, meaning it will exit the Friday schedule sooner than fans might expect. This earlier exit could leave a noticeable gap in CBS’s Friday lineup, especially given the show’s strong audience pull.
NCIS: Sydney and NCIS: Origins are both slated for shorter seasons, with each reportedly getting just 10 episodes next time around, a drop from their earlier 18 and 20-episode orders. Meanwhile, Matlock will also run for 13 episodes in its third season and is being held for a mid-season launch. These cuts come as CBS makes room for new additions like Cupertino, Einstein, and an NCIS spinoff set in New York, along with the comedy Eternally Yours, signaling a clear push toward expanding its slate.
But while CBS reshapes its schedule, it is also investing in fresh talent and new projects, one of which brings a familiar face back into the spotlight.
Matt LeBlanc lines up a rule-breaking return with new comedy
A fresh comedy is in the works at CBS Studios, backed by Paramount Global, and it is set to bring Matt LeBlanc back to television in an unexpected avatar. This time, he steps into the shoes of a burnt-out LAPD detective who is on the verge of retirement, until a sudden extension forces him to remain on duty for another five years.
The twist lies in his response. Instead of embracing the extension, his character attempts to sabotage his own career by bending rules and pushing limits in hopes of getting fired. Ironically, those reckless choices end up making him more effective at his job. The project, currently titled Flint, is being developed with Evan Katz attached as a writer, known for his work on 24. If it moves forward, LeBlanc could also take on an executive producer role, with a potential release window in the 2027–2028 season.
