According to Deadline, AI company Utopai Studios is set to co-produce director Hyo-joo Yang’s new feature film, Half Moon, which she wrote and will direct. The production team revealed that PAI, Utopai Studios’ AI system, will be used to support selected visual elements in the film. Apart from Utopai Studios, In Good Company, and Paper Barn Studios will also serve as co-producers.
Filming is scheduled to begin in Germany this August. The cast of the film includes Rina Kim, Elisa Hofmann, and Ana Kim, while cinematographer Alexandra Medianikova is also attached to the project. Yang has also spoken about the film and its themes.
“Half Moon is a story about the pain we carry from childhood, the people who unexpectedly teach us how to survive, and the small vows we make to keep going,” the director said in a statement (via Deadline).
The film, Half Moon, follows a lonely young girl, Yeri, and her estranged aunt Ah-Jin as they spend a summer together on a remote North Sea island. As they confront personal struggles and painful memories, the two gradually develop a meaningful bond. Through their relationship, the film will explore loneliness, family trauma, healing, and self-acceptance.
While more details about Half Moon are expected to surface in the coming months, there is also growing interest in the AI company helping bring the project to life.
What is the AI company Utopai Studio
The AI company Utopai Studios' roots can be traced back to former Google X engineer Cecilia Shen's dream. Her passion for technology and artificial intelligence led Shen to build a career in the tech industry, working at the Royal Bank of Canada and later Google X. She later partnered with Jie Yang to co-found a startup, Cybever, which focused on garnering detailed 3D virtual environments for video games and digital experiences.
