Casey Affleck recalls having an embarrassing call with Christopher Nolan over a Tenet argument. It is a great privilege to have any type of connection with Christopher Nolan - one of the most brilliant cinematic minds of all time - and they simply go beyond the usual working relationship. But does that privilege give someone the right to directly call him to settle a debate about one of his movies for them? Would that be embarrassing, though?

For most of us, that would be, and it was the same for Casey Affleck, but it was too late when he realized that.    

During an onstage interview at the Zurich Film Festival on Monday, actor Casey Affleck shared that trying to clear up questions about Christopher Nolan's films directly with the director is a path best avoided, admitting that doing so was "probably a mistake." Affleck - who collaborated with Nolan on both Interstellar and Oppenheimer - recalled an instance while driving his son home from school when a debate erupted over the plot of Tenet. Desperate to settle the dispute right then and there, the actor decided to call the filmmaker directly rather than searching for the answer online.

“We got him on the phone and asked him something that we could have easily looked up on Reddit. Once he said it, it sounded so obvious I felt embarrassed,” said Affleck about that moment.

He added further in his Zurich Film Festival interview that they have not spoken since, joking that the filmmaker might eventually return the favor by calling to critique his own film, Company, and ask what he was thinking. The whole incident might have been embarrassing for the actor in the moment, but it did give him a fun anecdote to tell at parties and gatherings.  

Reflecting on his experiences collaborating with Nolan on Interstellar and Oppenheimer, Affleck described the opportunity as an absolute honor shared by everyone who works with the director. He praised Nolan's unique set environment, highlighting that he is inclusive, provides brilliant yet minimal direction, and consistently elevates the work of everyone around him.

Casey Affleck actually had more to say about Christopher Nolan’s directorial capabilities, the reflection of which he also sees in his brother Ben Affleck, who also ventures into filmmaking every now and then.

Casey Affleck, who has directed three films of his own, noted that he deeply admires Christopher Nolan’s artistic integrity and approach to filmmaking. He observed that the acclaimed director lacks a calculated, careerist orientation, explaining that Nolan creates massive, wildly successful blockbusters driven entirely by personal creative curiosity rather than a desire to pander to audiences. Affleck added that he would consider himself fortunate to emulate that uncompromising philosophy in his own directing career.

Affleck further pointed to his brother, Ben Affleck, as another prime example of someone who navigates film selection with intelligence. He noted that while his brother, whose next directorial project, Animals, is due soon on Netflix, is strategic about making his projects commercially successful, he never panders to external expectations. Having witnessed his brother's creative process firsthand, Affleck explained that his internal dialogue focuses purely on artistic exploration - wondering whether he will enjoy an idea himself - rather than calculating whether it will easily sell to the masses.
