FCC head Brendan Carr has called James Talarico’s sit-down with Jimmy Kimmel something along the lines of being deceptive. The intersection of late-night comedy, political discourse, and federal regulation has once again sparked a fierce national debate over free speech. When popular television shows face intense scrutiny from media watchdogs over political coverage, the consequences stretch far beyond the screen. It sometimes transforms a standard guest booking into a high-stakes showdown over government interference and First Amendment rights.

The Jimmy Kimmel-James Talarico interview and its critique from FCC head Brendan Carr represent a similar kind of issue.

Brendan Carr blasts James Talarico’s viral Jimmy Kimmel appearance

The Republican chairman of the FCC, Brendan Carr, who is aligned with American President Donald Trump, accused Texas Democrat James Talarico, a candidate for the U.S. Senate, of conducting a "hoax" to attract attention and donations by sitting for an interview with Jimmy Kimmel. In order to avoid a possible confrontation with the FCC, ABC posted the interview on YouTube instead of broadcast TV.

“He’s just running the same hoax he did a few months ago on Colbert for the purpose of getting clicks and donations—he’s banking on people not understanding the statute or operating as partisan lemmings,” Carr said in his lengthy X (Twitter) post.

A meme ridiculing Talarico and Kimmel was also included in Carr's X post in an attempt to highlight a self-inflicted failure. It shows Kimmel riding a bike while carrying Talarico on the TV host's shoulders in a baby backpack carrier. When Kimmel puts a stick in the bike's spokes, the bike crashes.

On his ABC late-night show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, on Wednesday, Kimmel said that Talarico's interview will be available on YouTube rather than on television. He explained that this choice was taken into account for the local stations, particularly the ABC affiliates in Texas, who would have to put up with the FCC strikes on the interview.

In the first 24 hours after it was uploaded to YouTube on Thursday, Kimmel's interview with Talarico had over 5 million views. Colbert also had to upload the interview to YouTube, as network executives had cautioned him against including the candidate on the show. Anyhow, Talarico described ABC's refusal to broadcast his interview with Kimmel as essentially akin to US government censorship.
