Paul Walter Hauser has finally pulled back the curtain on the paycheck behind his MCU debut after revealing how much money he actually earned for playing Mole Man in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor portrayed Harvey Elder, the infamous ruler of Subterranea and historically the very first villain the Fantastic Four ever battled in Marvel Comics back in 1961. While Hauser’s appearance in the blockbuster remained relatively small onscreen, the actor’s brutally honest comments about Hollywood salaries have now sparked a massive conversation across fandom and industry circles alike.
But despite entering the MCU as the Fantastic Four’s very first comic-book villain, Paul Walter Hauser’s actual Marvel paycheck may seriously surprise fans.

In a surprisingly candid interview with Vulture, Paul Walter Hauser openly revealed how much he earned for playing Mole Man in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. According to the actor, supporting roles inside massive studio blockbusters work very differently from leading roles, explaining that he earned somewhere between $200,000 and $300,000 for the Marvel movie, with the figure landing around $250,000. However, Hauser admitted the number quickly shrank after taxes, agents, managers, lawyers, and charitable giving, eventually dropping closer to nearly $136,000 by the end.
And when I'm doing a supporting role, I know that I can back down and know that they only have so much money to play with. For something like Fantastic Four, you make two or three hundred thousand bucks to play Mole Man," Hauser revealed to Vulture.
Hauser further admitted that while the Marvel paycheck still sounded massive, it was nowhere near enough to “set you up for life,” revealing why he keeps jumping between countless projects instead of relying on one superhero franchise. The actor explained that leading films like The Luckiest Man in America and Balls Up actually pay him far more than smaller supporting roles inside billion-dollar universes. However, there are currently no confirmed plans for Mole Man’s MCU return, especially with The Fantastic Four: First Steps still lacking an officially announced sequel.
Even after building a $32.5 billion cinematic empire, the MCU now seems to be standing at one of the most dangerous turning points in its superhero history.
Marvel’s next billion-dollar era may depend on a complete MCU reset
While Marvel Studios still dominates global superhero culture, the MCU’s next era is already being reshaped through billion-dollar streaming wars and franchise survival tactics. One of Marvel’s biggest recent power moves arrived in January 2026 after Sony Pictures Entertainment secured a massive global streaming agreement with Netflix tied heavily to Spider-Man-related content. Despite generating a staggering $32.5 billion worldwide across the MCU, Marvel’s recent growth phase has noticeably slowed as audiences became increasingly overwhelmed by nonstop superhero releases, Disney+ expansions, and multiverse-heavy storytelling.

Now, Marvel appears ready to launch an entirely new financial and creative era between 2026 and 2027. The studio is bringing back powerhouse directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo alongside Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. At the same time, Marvel is heavily expanding internationally, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day securing a rare theatrical release in China. Following Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027, the franchise is also expected to fully leave the Multiverse Saga behind and shift its next massive storytelling wave toward the arrival of the X-Men and Mutants.
And while superhero blockbusters continue dominating billion-dollar headlines, Paul Walter Hauser’s brutally honest salary reveal has now exposed the far less glamorous reality hiding behind Marvel’s giant cinematic empire.
