Ser Lyonel Baratheon emerged as a standout character in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, portrayed with charm and swagger by Daniel Ings. His flamboyant demeanor and distinctive earring made him a fan favorite despite limited screen time. Lyonel’s arc concluded with his departure from the main narrative, leaving audiences eager for more.

Yet the actor has promised he will return.

In a Radio Times interview, Daniel Ings addressed the possibility of reprising his role as Ser Lyonel Baratheon and it seems that he clearly has no desire to close the door on the role of the flamboyant knight.

“Oh, man, I’d love to! Unfortunately, he’s not in any more of the stories that George R.R. Martin has written so far, and our showrunner, Ira Parker, is sticking closely to those.” Ings also pointed toward a piece of Westerosi history that could potentially bring his character back someday.

“There is a famous duel in the future [according to Game of Thrones lore]. Maybe I’ll be 60 by that time!” he told the Radiotimes. The remark references Lyonel’s place in the broader history of Westeros, where his name remains connected to events that occur beyond the current Dunk and Egg adaptation. 

“Whatever happens, I’d love to put in Lyonel’s little dangly earring again because he’s such a fun character,” Ings said. His enthusiasm leaves plenty of room for a future cameo should the series eventually reach material where Lyonel could logically appear. For now, Lyonel’s return remains dependent on how far HBO takes the story and which parts of Westerosi history eventually make it onto the screen.

The road ahead belongs to Dunk and Egg, with the second season already moving deeper into their journey.

Season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will adapt George R.R. Martin’s second Dunk and Egg novella, The Sworn Sword. The story follows Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire, Egg, as their travels take them into a dispute involving a landed knight and a rival lord.  Production on the second season has been underway in 2026, with Dexter Sol Ansell returning as Egg alongside Peter Claffey as Dunk.

HBO has announced that Season 2 will premiere in 2027, although an exact release date has yet to be confirmed. The next chapter will expand the world surrounding the wandering knight and his young companion while continuing the series’ intimate approach to Westeros.

New characters and conflicts will enter their path as Dunk attempts to uphold his knightly ideals in a realm filled with competing loyalties. The prospect of future seasons also keeps the possibility of familiar faces alive. For now, fans will have to wait and see whether the show eventually finds a place for Lyonel Baratheon to return.
