There still seems to be some hope for the Game of Thrones spin-off on Lord Corlys. The Game of Thrones universe is filled with fascinating, layered, and complex characters whose intriguing backstories could inspire shows of their own. One such character is Lord Corlys from the prequel series House of the Dragon. It was announced that the fan-favorite character would receive his own spin-off show exploring his adventures in the past.

However, after several major production changes, there has been very little news about the project.

Fortunately, the Lord Corlys spin-off, originally titled 9 Voyages, has not been canceled by HBO as there is no update on cancellation. However, it has undergone several major changes. Originally announced alongside two other Game of Thrones spin-offs in March 2021, the project was planned as a live-action series. However, the studio decided to turn it into an animated show.

The potential animated series is now titled The Sea Snake, which is the nickname held by Lord Corlys. And the new title is currently being developed under the helm of Genndy Tartakovsky, as reported by Collider. While the project remains in development, the hype around the newest season of House of the Dragon could potentially help accelerate its progress.

Details of the spin-off have already been teased within the main series. It will reportedly follow Lord Corlys' nine legendary voyages as the captain of his flagship, the Sea Snake, as he sailed to the farthest corners of the known world. During these tours, he amassed immense wealth, rare treasures, and priceless gems to fill the House Velaryon's treasures.

However, for now, fans may have to wait quite a while before the show arrives, as Steve Toussaint previously hinted that the project might still have a long way to go before release.

Who is Steve Toussaint

Steve Toussaint, who plays Corlys Velaryon in House of the Dragon, told ScreenRant that he has not heard many updates about the spin-off after the decision of the animated project. But he assured that the series is still possible. The actor even shared that he would love to explore more of Corlys' adventures if given the opportunity.

“Do you know, actually, what most interests me about them [Corlys and Princess Rhaenys Targaryen], and this is terrible because I’m a bit of a romantic, I’m actually more interested in how he won Rhaenys … I love the stuff about him going off [on] adventures because I think a lot of him doing that is his spirit, that he has to go and see, but also to impress this lady," he said.

While many see the shift from live action to animation as an unfavorable sign, the change could simply reflect the challenges of adapting Lord Corlys' globe-spanning voyages. Animation may actually be a better medium to bring those adventures to life. If the project moves forward, it would become the first animated spin-off in the Game of Thrones franchise.
