Marvel Studios may be preparing to give one of the X-Men’s most iconic characters a surprising new twist, and the latest casting rumor has already sent fans into a frenzy. The speculation centers on a major character whose next MCU incarnation has been the subject of intense casting chatter for months. But is Marvel really considering a completely different take on the legendary mutant?
While the rumor sounds wild enough, there is a specific source behind the claim that has fans taking a second look.
Is Marvel really looking for a female Magneto?
According to industry insider DanielRPK, Marvel Studios is reportedly looking for an actress to play a gender-swapped version of Magneto in its upcoming X-Men reboot. The claim suggests the studio could move away from the traditional male portrayal made famous by Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender and introduce a female version of the Master of Magnetism instead. However, the report remains a rumor, with Marvel yet to publicly confirm that it is considering a gender-swapped Magneto.

The speculation arrives after months of casting rumors surrounding the character. Adam Driver was previously heavily linked to the role, only for the actor to emerge as Mister Sinister, while names including Denzel Washington and Henry Cavill have also circulated in connection with Magneto. With Marvel keeping much of the reboot under wraps, the latest report adds another unexpected twist to an already chaotic casting saga.
But while Magneto’s next incarnation remains surrounded by question marks, Marvel has already revealed plenty about the mutant team that will bring the reboot into the MCU.
X-Men cast so far: Who’s joining Marvel’s mutant reboot?
Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men reboot is being directed by Jake Schreier, who previously helmed Thunderbolts*, with Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo handling the screenplay. The movie is currently scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2028, positioning the mutant team as a major part of the MCU’s next era following Avengers: Secret Wars. The confirmed ensemble includes Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Adam Driver as Mister Sinister, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Maya Boyd as Storm.

Marvel is also expected to take the new team beyond some of the franchise’s most familiar storylines, drawing inspiration from major comic-book eras while exploring the X-Men’s core themes of prejudice, identity, and coexistence. The story is expected to center on Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters in Westchester, New York, giving the MCU a fresh entry point into mutant society rather than immediately revisiting heavily adapted arcs such as the Dark Phoenix Saga.
For now, though, the biggest mystery remains Magneto, and until Marvel confirms the casting, the gender-swapped version should remain firmly in the rumor category.
