Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest anticipators can douse their excitement as Henry Cavill is not going to be a part of it. Henry Cavill might have been expected to be brooding again, but this time there was going to be no Superman suit, no saving Earth, and certainly no Kryptonian business. Instead, the actor was assumed to be eyeing a Targaryen crown, declaring, “I will take what is mine with fire and blood.”

With Warner Bros. confirming Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest as a theatrical film, the internet has already chosen its dragonrider. Yet, it seems the casting rumors are only that: rumors. 

Henry Cavill certainly possesses the required brooding pedigree, but whether the casting whispers possess anything more substantial than dragon smoke requires closer inspection.

The Henry Cavill casting rumors connected to Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest have largely grown from one irresistible piece of fan logic: he already looks Targaryen-like, suspiciously, and no official truth whatsoever. His Geralt of Rivia transformation in The Witcher, complete with silver-white hair and an icy, imposing presence, made it remarkably easy for fans to imagine him abandoning monster hunting for dragon-riding and taking up Aegon I Targaryen’s crown.

Then there is the small matter of Aegon the Conqueror requiring someone who can make silence feel intimidating. Henry Cavill has spent years playing physically formidable characters, from Geralt of Rivia to Superman, while Immortals added another sword-and-sandal entry to his fantasy résumé. That combination of warrior credentials and commanding screen presence makes the fan-casting feel almost suspiciously convenient.

Still, the enthusiasm remains firmly in fan territory because Warner Bros. Discovery and HBO have not confirmed Henry Cavill for the role. The project is reportedly still in its writing stages, with Bo Willimon working on a fresh script and no director attached yet. Until official casting arrives, the Cavill-as-Aegon campaign remains more dragon smoke than dragon fire.

Henry Cavill is hardly the only name being swept into the Aegon’s Conquest casting whirlwind. Because Aegon the Conqueror did not conquer Westeros alone, fan-casting posts have naturally bundled his sister-wives into the same imaginary casting announcement. Visenya Targaryen and Rhaenys Targaryen have consequently become fixtures of the internet’s increasingly elaborate, entirely unofficial dream cast.

Visenya Targaryen has inspired fan picks ranging from Katheryn Winnick to Anya Taylor-Joy, with fans chasing that fierce warrior energy associated with Dark Sister. Rhaenys Targaryen, meanwhile, receives the softer royal treatment, with Elle Fanning and Phoebe Dynevor frequently floated for the role. None of these names represent confirmed casting, however, making the supposed Targaryen casting news considerably more smoke than fire.
