Christopher Nolan is reportedly in early talks with Lucasfilm to direct a dark, standalone Star Wars film about the rise of Darth Bane and the creation of the Rule of Two. Bane is the Sith Lord who decided that only one master and one apprentice should wield the dark side, a piece of lore found mostly in Legends material. Fans online started dreaming up a full cast within hours.
While the Rule of Two limits the Sith to a master and an apprentice, this rumor started somewhere less mighty.

No, Christopher Nolan is not directing a dark Star Wars film about Darth Bane. The claim started on an X account called @HavocCrave_, which describes itself as an unofficial parody and satirical news account. Its post appeared around October 21, 2026, and plenty of people treated it like real reporting. No credible reports have confirmed the rumor, and Nolan has never held formal talks with Lucasfilm about any Star Wars project.

Although @HavocCrave_ claims Nolan is in early talks to direct a Star Wars film, his past comments suggest otherwise. Nolan has long admired the franchise, calling the 1977 original a childhood game changer. He even moderated a Directors Guild of America event with George Lucas in 2011. However, admiration does not necessarily mean he wants to direct a film in the galaxy far, far away. Around 2015, Nolan admitted he would be afraid to touch Star Wars. When asked about directing a Star Wars film in 2023, Nolan simply declined the possibility.
As Nolan keeps his distance from the Sith, there is one genre he openly admits would leave him trembling.
What genre could make Christopher Nolan nervous on set
Christopher Nolan recently appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and confessed that a romantic comedy would terrify him. The filmmaker who sent astronauts through space in Interstellar and folded dreams inside dreams in Inception called comedy one of the hardest things in the world to pull off. He enjoys a good romantic comedy as a viewer, but he knows a missed joke leaves a director with nowhere to hide.

Horror is a genre Nolan actually wants to try. He told The Hollywood Reporter that horror demands a strong concept before anything else. He even suggested that The Odyssey already carries some horror elements, and he praised the recent film Obsession for its concept and storytelling. No horror project is officially on his slate yet. As for Darth Bane, the only dark side Nolan has hinted at exploring is horror.
