It is not new information that Avengers: Doomsday is a big part of the Multiverse Saga finale, ushering in a new era for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With that in mind, one would also remember what mayhem Avengers: Infinity War brought for the superheroes in order to lay the foundation for the phase finale, Avengers: Endgame. Now, fans expect that same paradigm repeating itself for Doomsday, and the most prominent casualty they are anticipating is the Winter Soldier, a.k.a. Bucky Barnes.

But whether this plot point is even true or it is just something the internet has woven together as a possible emotional beat for the film remains to be deeply dissected.

Would Bucky survive Avengers: Doomsday?

Nothing is set in stone yet, as Marvel has neither confirmed Bucky’s on-screen demise nor announced an official exit for Avengers: Doomsday. Instead, the speculation is fueled by a web of hints: persistent internet rumors pointing to Victor von Doom as his executioner, Sebastian Stan's own purposefully cagey remarks, and the actor securing a prominent project with a competing studio.

While these pieces have left fans preparing themselves for a tragic farewell, anticipation should not be mistaken for confirmation. For now, the talk of his character's death remains pure theory rather than established fact. Fueling the internet's obsession are two separate leaks that ignited the Bucky death rumors.

On August 19 and 20, notable scooper MyTimeToShineHello shared images purportedly depicting Bucky's executioner-style demise at the hands of Doctor Doom - though ComicBookMovie warned that portions of the media could be AI-generated or enhanced, a label the scooper themselves applied to at least one post. Shortly after, on September 4, an anonymous X account dropped a purported full plot breakdown for Doomsday, alleging that Doom executes Bucky in cold blood while brainwashing Steve Rogers into taking up the mantle of Captain HYDRA, per Everything Marvelous.

With the rumors gaining prominence among Marvel fans, one would wonder about the logic behind this theory that appeals to them.

What does Bucky’s death really accomplish?

The most prominent iteration of the rumor claims that Doctor Doom murders Bucky, serving as the devastating catalyst that finally unites the Avengers, Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four, and X-Men in a unified front against him. On paper, it provides a clean, high-stakes emotional beat, and Doom certainly requires a heinous act to draw the collective wrath of the entire Marvel roster. However, a glaring narrative logic gap undermines the premise: the vast majority of those heroes have never actually crossed paths with Bucky.

Consequently, his loss would hardly pack the same emotional wallop for characters in the X-Men or Fantastic Four as it would for close allies like Sam Wilson, Steve Rogers, and Yelena Belova, who is hinted to be the heart of Doomsday. Ultimately, a tragic death can only rally a united front among those who actually knew and cared about the fallen hero, making this grand all-hands-on-deck rumor considerably shakier than it first appears.
