Marvel superheroes work hard, but Marvel Studios has been working even harder to keep crucial plot details and character appearances under wraps. The studio and its stars have been careful with tricky questions about the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday while denying selective fake rumors. Now, it seems Marvel may have to juggle yet another challenge.

A claim that Marvel used generative AI in its art book has been making rounds online. Amid the flood of rumors, fake images, and false updates about the film, there is curiosity over whether the recent claim has any truth in it.

Truth behind Avengers: Doomsday AI rumors

An X post from DiscussingFish claimed that the Avengers: Doomsday art book revealed AI-generated elements in every piece of artwork. However, DiscussingFish is a parody account known for sharing fake news, so the claim that Marvel Studios used generative AI for Avengers: Doomsday is most certainly false. The post also linked to a The Direct article that is no longer available, further casting doubt on the claim.

There has been no official confirmation from Marvel Studios that generative AI was used for Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars. However, concerns about whether Marvel Studios could use AI in the future have grown following the Russo brothers’ Joe and Anthony Russo’s views on the technology. The filmmakers have also reportedly shared machine-generated Avengers artwork on social media, as per The Direct.

“We have to approach AI the same way we approach all technological innovations. It’s potentially a valuable tool, but it’s the kind of tool that artists always have to remain in control of, but there’s going to be some valuable role in the creative process and the filmmaking process,” Anthony told The Hollywood Reporter.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Breaks Pre-Sales Record With Over $35M 4 Months Before Release

While Avengers: Doomsday has not been officially linked to any AI use, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has faced backlash recently over alleged AI use in its concept art.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day art book showed a warped image

Just a few days after the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a $50 art book featuring concept art from the film was released. However, one of the artworks, “Big City, Little Spider,” created by artist Scott McInnes, appeared to show signs of generative AI use, as per The Direct. Fans quickly pointed out several issues with the artwork, including bizarre and distorted objects.

One such issue involved two taxis appearing to merge into one, creating a warped image. Another was a fire escape staircase that appeared warped and was called out by fans as a possible AI glitch. Although there has been no official confirmation that generative AI was used to create the artwork, the image has sparked a conversation about AI in Hollywood. Whether Marvel Studios could use generative AI for Avengers: Doomsday or other upcoming Marvel movies, however, remains unknown.
