Queer dramas have flourished in Hollywood recently, with films like Love Lies Bleeding and series like Heartstopper demonstrating strong audience appetite for authentic LGBTQ+ storytelling that resonates across demographics. Recognizing both cultural importance and commercial viability in narratives previously considered niche risks. This momentum has generated speculation about major stars joining upcoming queer projects, with recent rumors suggesting Florence Pugh and Madelyn Cline might headline such a film.

Is that information true?

A recent post circulating on X claims Florence Pugh (Thunderbolts) and Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks) are rumored to play lesbians in an untitled 2028 project. However, there is currently no credible evidence supporting the claim. Searches of major trade coverage have produced no announcement from Variety, 

That absence matters because legitimate casting news involving two established stars would generally identify at least some combination of the director, writer, studio, production company, or story. The circulating claim provides none of those details. At present, the alleged 2028 project remains an unsupported social media rumor rather than an announced production.

Pugh does have several confirmed projects on her slate. She is set to return as Princess Irulan in Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Three. She is also attached to The Midnight Library, which is scheduled to release around 2027.

Cline, meanwhile, has continued building her film career beyond Outer Banks. Her upcoming work includes Day Drinker, starring alongside Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz, while her untitled Judd Apatow comedy with Glen Powell is scheduled for February 2027. Neither project connects her with Pugh.

The confusion may partly stem from how prominent Pugh has become within Marvel's current plans

Kevin Feige has indicated that her Yelena Belova will play a major role in Avengers: Doomsday, with the film scheduled for December 18, 2026. Marvel's official cast listing confirms Pugh's return as Yelena. Yelena's MCU journey began with Black Widow, continued through Hawkeye and Thunderbolts, and expanded with her appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Feige previously teased that audiences would see Yelena before Doomsday, and Pugh ultimately appeared in the 2026 Spider-Man film. Marvel is also leaving a theatrical gap between Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Feige told Empire that the strategy is focused on quality and preventing the studio from becoming stretched across too many releases. Secret Wars is scheduled for December 17, 2027.

That gives Pugh a clearly documented Marvel path through 2027, while Cline has her own announced projects. Neither trail leads to the rumored lesbian romance.
