Ex LucasFilms Head Kathleen Kennedy Echoes a Resounding “No” for Replacing Humans with AI in Films
Artificial Intelligence has divided Hollywood, with many protesting its use while others explore ways for it to coexist responsibly within the industry. Jenna Ortega and Cate Blanchett are among several actors and film industry members who have spoken out against it. Warner Bros.’ recent legal threat to ByteDance also caused much buzz.
Now, another voice to join the discussion is Kathleen Kennedy, who recently spoke about her stance on AI and what role it should play in the industry going forward.

Kathleen Kennedy recently sat down with Variety for a conversation about her exit from Disney. During the discussion, she also touched on one of the industry’s most talked-about topics, which is AI. Speaking about it, she acknowledged that the technology could be useful for enhancing speed and suggested it should be viewed more as “augmented” reality rather than artificial intelligence. However, she clarified that it should never replace human creators.
“Many of us in the industry absolutely are committed to human beings and a human point of view,” she said.
“(We’ll see) if these tools can end up augmenting that process, speed things up and find a place in the flow of creativity. That’s what I find quite intriguing about some of these tools. But, to actually replace human beings in the process? No.”
There are several others, such as Matthew McConaughey, who believe that AI cannot be stopped and have warned that actors should protect themselves by owning the rights to their likeness and voice. And Kennedy, who seemed intrigued by how AI can help, is clearly against the idea of it replacing humans. This does not come as a surprise from the 72-year-old woman, who has been behind some of the biggest creative projects, such as Star Wars.
She recently stepped down from her position as President of Lucasfilm and spoke about handing the responsibilities to her successor.
Kathleen Kennedy addressed the time of her exit from Disney
During the discussion with Variety, Kathleen Kennedy was asked about her time at The Walt Disney Company and about handing over responsibilities to Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan. Speaking about it, she revealed that she had spent a long time mentoring the two of them to eventually step into these roles.
“He had so much experience in animation. He’s so knowledgeable about Star Wars and loves it so much, it’s really been a 10-year mentoring process for both of them,” she said.

The same goes for Brennan, who earlier held the GM position. The ample thought she put into mentoring Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan is proof that Kathleen Kennedy has her heart at the right place, and this is further reflected in her opinion about AI in the cinematic landscape.
