Ewan McGregor slipped into Obi-Wan Kenobi’s robes and somehow made inheriting Alec Guinness’s legendary Jedi mantle look suspiciously effortless. Across the prequels and the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, McGregor did more than mimic his predecessor, studying Guinness’s A New Hope dialogue and even keeping an audio file of his lines to refine his vocal delivery. His careful attention to Guinness’s posture, gestures, expressions, and facial resemblance helped turn the younger Jedi into a convincing bridge to the original trilogy.

Apparently, McGregor is still not ready to let Obi-Wan Kenobi retire, and he already has ideas for another Star Wars return.

Speaking to Variety, Ewan McGregor is not merely daydreaming about another Star Wars comeback; he has already taken his Obi-Wan Kenobi pitch to Lucasfilm chief Dave Filoni. While Filoni was filming Ahsoka with Mary Elizabeth Winstead, McGregor floated the idea of a story exploring where Yoda disappeared after Episode III and whether Obi-Wan could reach him.

"After the end of ‘Episode III’, when we all go to the four or five corners of the galaxy — or however many corners it’s got! — I won’t have been in touch with him. But he’s out there. So I think there could be a story there where I’m trying to reach out to him," McGregor said of his pitch. 

The timing gives the pitch plenty of Jedi-sized room to breathe. At the end of the 2022 Obi-Wan Kenobi series, the former Jedi walks into the Tatooine desert after realizing that Luke Skywalker needs an ordinary childhood without his mysterious guardian hovering nearby. McGregor now sees that lonely chapter as fertile ground for another adventure.

What makes McGregor's enthusiasm while talking to Variety especially satisfying is how dramatically his relationship with the franchise has changed. The early prequel backlash was painful enough that he avoided fan conventions for years, but the Obi-Wan Kenobi premiere rewrote that history. Hearing thousands of adults cheer for the films they loved as children finally showed McGregor how deeply his Jedi had endured.

Ewan McGregor is not exactly short on interesting places to turn up next, with Hulu’s The Spot currently standing as his most prominent unreleased project. The eight-episode psychological thriller pairs McGregor with Claire Danes, who plays a successful surgeon whose seemingly perfect life begins to unravel after a child is k***** in a hit-and-run.

McGregor plays the surgeon’s schoolteacher husband, putting him firmly inside a marriage where suspicion is about to become an especially unwelcome houseguest. Produced by A24 and showrun by Ed Solomon, the series is slated to enter production in 2026, giving McGregor plenty to keep busy with before potentially returning to a galaxy far, far away.
