While speaking at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Ewan McGregor reflected on making Bleeding Love, the 2024 drama he starred in alongside his daughter, Clara McGregor. The film carried special significance because his daughter not only appeared in it but also co-wrote the screenplay. According to McGregor, the story's themes of estrangement and reconciliation closely resonated with aspects of their own relationship, making the experience both emotionally challenging and deeply meaningful for the father-daughter duo.
Behind the fictional story was an emotional connection that felt remarkably familiar.
How Bleeding Love reflected Ewan McGregor’s real-life relationship with his daughter
According to McGregor, Clara approached him with the idea for the film and told him she was writing a story about them. The actor admitted he was initially nervous, fearing the project would be completely autobiographical.
"It was about the reparation of a relationship between a father and daughter that hadn't fully happened between us," McGregor said while discussing the film. Although he stressed that Bleeding Love was not a direct retelling of their lives, he acknowledged that it contained significant elements inspired by their real experiences.

The actor explained that filming together became an important part of their healing process, allowing them to explore themes of estrangement, reconciliation, and family through the characters they portrayed on screen. As reported by The Times, McGregor later described the experience as an important step in repairing a relationship that had not yet fully healed at the time the film was made.
One scene, in particular, carried a significance that neither father nor daughter could ignore.
The moment in Bleeding Love that hit home for the McGregors
Ewan McGregor recalled a powerful moment in the in Bleeding Love where Clara McGregor's character confronts her father and openly expresses years of frustration and hurt. McGregor noted that the scene felt especially meaningful because Clara had also been honest about her feelings during a difficult period in their real-life relationship. Reflecting on his 2017 separation from Eve Mavrakis, McGregor acknowledged that the experience was painful for the entire family. He said his children were deeply hurt and praised his daughter for being vocal about her emotions rather than keeping them bottled up.

"It was a very painful time," McGregor said. "My children were very hurt, Clara was very hurt, and Clara was I'm very grateful for it now, but she was very open with me, very vocal with me, and expressed her anger very well," he said.
Today, the father and daughter appear to be on much stronger footing. Clara McGregor previously described making Bleeding Love with her father as an "incredible experience," noting that the project gave them a rare opportunity to spend meaningful time together while collaborating creatively. As McGregor continues taking on personal projects and revisiting defining moments from his career, he has also expressed interest in returning to one of his most iconic roles, Obi-Wan Kenobi.
