After carrying the weight of space as Earth’s last hope in Project Hail Mary, which crossed $300 million globally in under two weeks, Ryan Gosling seemed far from done with the stars. With another leap into the galaxy already lined up through Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, the actor is set to extend his run across space-driven spectacles. However, in a sudden turn, the actor has now stepped away from one of his anticipated upcoming collaborations with Oscar-winning directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, which has caught attention across headlines.

What really led Gosling to take his final bow from the Daniels’ upcoming Universal film, and is there more behind the exit?

Originally slated for a June 12, 2027, release before shifting to November 19, 2027, the untitled project from Oscar-winning directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert had Ryan Gosling set to lead. However, with plot details still tightly under wraps, Gosling will no longer star in the film, a development confirmed by Variety. No reason has been given for his exit, leaving the project with an unexpected shift just as it moves toward production.

Known collectively as the Daniels, Kwan, and Scheinert rose to global acclaim with 2022's Everything Everywhere All at Once, which crossed $100 million at the box office and went on to win seven Oscars, including Best Picture. They are producing the upcoming film under their Playgrounds deal with Universal Pictures, alongside Jonathan Wang.

Not new to the pull of space-driven stories, Ryan Gosling is now set to step deeper into the galaxy with Star Wars: Starfighter, an upcoming American space opera. Directed by Shawn Levy and written by Jonathan Tropper, the film is set five years after 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, expanding the ever-evolving Star Wars timeline. While stepping into a galaxy far beyond his own, Gosling has recently been spotted sharing his excitement about entering the Star Wars universe, expressing a growing interest in taking on more such space-driven ventures. However, alongside him, the film also brings a strong ensemble including Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.

While Gosling steps away from one major collaboration, his journey into a galaxy far beyond ensures his 2027 slate still holds the spotlight.
