At the center of it all remains Yellowstone, the flagship Kevin Costner-led drama that transformed Taylor Sheridan’s ranch saga into a global phenomenon across five seasons.

The franchise has since expanded beyond the main series with several direct continuations. Marshals follows Luke Grimes’ Kayce Dutton after the events of Yellowstone. His cowboy instincts are paired with Navy SEAL training as part of an elite U.S. Marshals unit operating across Montana. Meanwhile, Dutton Ranch reunites fan-favorite couple Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, with Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser reprising their iconic roles.

'Dutton Ranch' Gives 'Yellowstone' Fans a New Chapter for Rip and Beth to Get Invested In

While several corners of the Yellowstone universe are already keeping fans occupied, Taylor Sheridan still has a few major chapters waiting in the wings.

The biggest upcoming project is 1944, the next historical prequel following 1883 and 1923. Although Paramount has yet to reveal an official cast or storyline, the series is expected to explore the Dutton family during the World War II era, bridging another crucial gap in the ranch’s history. The project emerged after the conclusion of 1923, with several surviving characters from that series potentially positioned to continue their stories in the new timeline. Sheridan has described 1944 as part of his broader effort to trace the Dutton family’s evolution across multiple generations, making it one of the franchise’s most anticipated additions.

Another long-discussed expansion remains 6666, a spin-off centered around the legendary Four Sixes Ranch in Texas. Originally linked to Yellowstone’s Jimmy Hurdstrom, played by Jefferson White, the project was envisioned as a deeper exploration of modern ranching culture outside Montana. However, development was paused after Sheridan purchased the real-life Four Sixes Ranch, with the creator emphasizing the need to preserve the property’s history and authenticity before moving forward. 

With multiple timelines, prequels, sequels, and spin-offs now stretching across nearly two centuries of Dutton history, figuring out the ideal Yellowstone watch order can be almost as complicated as the family’s own legacy.

With nearly 16 million viewers tuning in for the Yellowstone Season 5 premiere, the franchise has grown far beyond a single television series. Notably, The Madison is no longer considered part of the Yellowstone universe despite originally being developed as a sequel series, making it the lone outlier in Taylor Sheridan’s ever-expanding Western empire.
