What began as a neo-Western family drama has since evolved into one of television’s most successful modern franchises. Co-created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, Yellowstone has shattered ratings records, revived Hollywood’s appetite for Western storytelling, and grown into a sprawling universe reportedly worth more than $3 billion. From origin stories set in the 1800s to present-day Dutton sagas, the franchise continues to expand long after the flagship series rode into the sunset.
And while the Dutton family tree keeps branching in every direction, here is every series currently airing, in development, and the best order to watch them.

The Yellowstone universe may have expanded far beyond its original ranch boundaries, but several key chapters are already available for audiences to dive into. For now, the sequel series of the flagship, Marshals, and the 2026 released Dutton Ranch, stand ongoing. The journey begins with 1883, the acclaimed prequel starring Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Sam Elliott, and Isabel May, which chronicles the Dutton family’s perilous trek across the American frontier before establishing what would eventually become the Yellowstone Ranch.
That story continues decades later in 1923, where Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren lead a new generation of Duttons battling economic hardship, family conflict, and the changing landscape of the American West. At the center of it all remains Yellowstone, the flagship Kevin Costner-led drama that transformed Taylor Sheridan’s ranch saga into a global phenomenon across five seasons.
The franchise has since expanded beyond the main series with several direct continuations. Marshals follows Luke Grimes’ Kayce Dutton after the events of Yellowstone. His cowboy instincts are paired with Navy SEAL training as part of an elite U.S. Marshals unit operating across Montana. Meanwhile, Dutton Ranch reunites fan-favorite couple Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, with Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser reprising their iconic roles.
The upcoming series also features Ed Harris, Annette Bening, Jai Courtney, and Finn Little, with the story expected to explore the next chapter of the Dutton legacy after the flagship show’s dramatic conclusion.
While several corners of the Yellowstone universe are already keeping fans occupied, Taylor Sheridan still has a few major chapters waiting in the wings.
Which Yellowstone spin-offs are still in development?
The biggest upcoming project is 1944, the next historical prequel following 1883 and 1923. Although Paramount has yet to reveal an official cast or storyline, the series is expected to explore the Dutton family during the World War II era, bridging another crucial gap in the ranch’s history. The project emerged after the conclusion of 1923, with several surviving characters from that series potentially positioned to continue their stories in the new timeline. Sheridan has described 1944 as part of his broader effort to trace the Dutton family’s evolution across multiple generations, making it one of the franchise’s most anticipated additions.
Another long-discussed expansion remains 6666, a spin-off centered around the legendary Four Sixes Ranch in Texas. Originally linked to Yellowstone’s Jimmy Hurdstrom, played by Jefferson White, the project was envisioned as a deeper exploration of modern ranching culture outside Montana. However, development was paused after Sheridan purchased the real-life Four Sixes Ranch, with the creator emphasizing the need to preserve the property’s history and authenticity before moving forward.
With multiple timelines, prequels, sequels, and spin-offs now stretching across nearly two centuries of Dutton history, figuring out the ideal Yellowstone watch order can be almost as complicated as the family’s own legacy.
What is the correct Yellowstone watch order?
With nearly 16 million viewers tuning in for the Yellowstone Season 5 premiere, the franchise has grown far beyond a single television series. Taylor Sheridan’s Western empire is now estimated to have generated close to $2.9 billion in revenue and roughly $700 million in profit, while fans have spent more than $450 million on DVDs and digital purchases alone. Unsurprisingly, as the universe continues to expand across multiple timelines and spin-offs, here is the viewing order:-
1. 1883 (2021)
2. 1923 (2022–2025)
3. 1944 (Upcoming)
4. Yellowstone (2018–2024)
5. Marshals (2026)
6. Dutton Ranch (2026)
7. 6666 (TBA)

Even after Yellowstone wrapped and Kevin Costner rode off into the sunset, the Dutton saga has continued expanding through hit spin-offs like Marshals and the streaming powerhouse Dutton Ranch. While 1944 has yet to premiere and 6666 remains on hold, both are expected to expand key chapters of the franchise’s timeline. Notably, The Madison is no longer considered part of the Yellowstone universe despite originally being developed as a sequel series, making it the lone outlier in Taylor Sheridan’s ever-expanding Western empire.
And with new stories stretching from the frontier days of 1883 to the future of Dutton Ranch, the Yellowstone universe still has plenty left in the saddle for fans.
