Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey brings one of ancient Greece’s greatest legends to the big screen, adapting Homer’s epic poem about Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, and his perilous 10-year journey home after the Trojan War. Along the way, he faces deadly creatures, supernatural forces, and the interference of powerful gods while trying to reunite with his wife Penelope and son Telemachus. Scheduled to release in theaters on July 17, 2026, Nolan’s mythic action epic will introduce audiences to a world filled with heroes, monsters, and divine beings.

While the film’s full portrayal of Greek mythology remains under wraps, several Greek gods, goddesses, and legendary figures from Homer’s tale are expected to appear. These divine figures could play a major role in shaping Odysseus’ dangerous journey, influencing his victories, struggles, and encounters throughout The Odyssey.

1. Zeus

In Homer’s Odyssey, Zeus stands as the supreme ruler of the gods and the ultimate force of justice and fate. Though he rarely intervenes directly, his decisions shape Odysseus’ journey. At Athena’s request, Zeus allows Odysseus to finally return home after 20 years away. When Odysseus’ crew commits the crime of killing Helios’ sacred cattle, Zeus answers the sun god’s demand for punishment by destroying their ship with a devastating thunderbolt.

Later, he restores peace in Ithaca by ending the conflict between Odysseus and the families of the fallen suitors. In Christopher Nolan’s 2026 adaptation, Zeus is not portrayed by an actor and does not appear as a physical character.

Instead, his presence may be represented through powerful forces of nature, embodying divine judgment, fate, and the overwhelming power of the universe.

2. Circe

Circe is portrayed by Academy Award nominee Samantha Morton in Christopher Nolan’s 2026 adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey. Known for her intense and layered performances, Morton brings a darker interpretation to one of Greek mythology’s most famous enchantresses. In Homer’s original epic, Circe is a powerful goddess who lives on the mysterious island of Aeaea. She is introduced as a dangerous figure who transforms Odysseus’ men into pigs using her magic after luring them into her palace. Odysseus resists her spells with the help of Hermes, who gives him the protective herb moly, forcing Circe to restore his crew.

However, she later becomes a crucial ally, offering Odysseus shelter for a year and guiding him toward the Underworld, the Sirens, Scylla, and Charybdis. In Nolan’s film, Circe’s story is expected to take a more psychological approach. Rather than focusing purely on supernatural magic, her encounter with Odysseus may explore manipulation, temptation, and the fragile nature of human identity, making Aeaea a haunting test of Odysseus’ intelligence and resilience.

3. Hermes

No cast reveal has been made for Hermes in Christopher Nolan’s 2026 adaptation of Odyssey. Unlike some of the mythological figures who are expected to have physical portrayals, Hermes’ presence appears to be reimagined through the film’s grounded approach to Greek mythology. In Homer’s original epic, Hermes serves as the messenger of the gods and a key force behind Odysseus’ survival. He helps Odysseus defeat Circe by providing the magical herb moly, protecting him from her spells and allowing him to rescue his transformed crew.

Following Odysseus’ imprisonment on Ogygia, Hermes plays another vital role by carrying Zeus’ decree to Calypso, forcing her to release the hero after seven years of captivity. He later appears in the final moments of the epic as a guide for the souls of the slain suitors, leading them into the Underworld. In Christopher Nolan’s adaptation, Hermes’ traditional role as a divine messenger may be reinterpreted through Odysseus’ own strategic thinking, instincts, and determination to survive rather than through a direct appearance by the god himself.

4. Poseidon

Poseidon is one of the major mythological figures in Homer’s Odyssey, but Christopher Nolan’s 2026 adaptation takes a grounded approach by not casting an actor to portray the god of the sea. Instead of appearing as a physical deity, Poseidon is represented through the terrifying power and unpredictability of the ocean itself, turning nature into Odysseus’ greatest enemy. In Homer’s epic, Poseidon becomes hostile toward Odysseus after the hero blinds his son, the Cyclops Polyphemus.

Seeking revenge, the sea god repeatedly destroys Odysseus’ attempts to return home, unleashing violent storms and delaying his journey for years. His wrath represents the consequences of human pride and defying forces beyond mortal control. For Nolan’s film, this interpretation allows the sea to become a realistic, psychological threat rather than a fantasy villain. Every storm, shipwreck, and struggle against the waves reflects Odysseus’ battle against fate itself.

5. Helios

One of the most devastating moments in Homer’s The Odyssey revolves around Helios, the Titan god of the Sun, whose sacred cattle become the source of Odysseus’ crew’s downfall. Helios keeps his immortal cattle on the island of Thrinacia, and both the prophet Tiresias and the sorceress Circe warn Odysseus that harming them will bring disaster. When Odysseus and his men become stranded due to relentless winds, hunger pushes the exhausted crew beyond their limits.

While Odysseus is away praying, they slaughter Helios’ cattle, committing an act that demands divine punishment. Helios appeals to Zeus, threatening to withdraw the sun from the mortal world if justice is not served. Zeus ultimately destroys Odysseus’ ship with a devastating thunderbolt, killing the entire crew except Odysseus. In Christopher Nolan’s 2026 adaptation, Helios is not played by a confirmed actor and is expected to be represented through the consequences of this tragedy rather than a physical appearance.

6. Athena

Athena is portrayed by Zendaya in Christopher Nolan’s 2026 adaptation, making her one of the most important divine figures with a direct presence in Odysseus’ journey. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Athena is Odysseus’ greatest ally, using her wisdom, strategy, and divine influence to help him reclaim his home. She persuades Zeus to allow his return after 20 years away, guides Telemachus as he searches for his missing father, and repeatedly protects Odysseus through disguise, deception, and tactical planning.

During the final battle against the suitors in Ithaca, Athena fights alongside Odysseus, helping him restore order to his kingdom. In Nolan’s film, Athena’s role is expected to explore the connection between divine guidance and human intelligence. Rather than simply being a mythological protector, she represents the strategic mind and resilience that help Odysseus survive war, trauma, and the impossible path home. Her presence could serve as both a guide and a reflection of Odysseus’ own inner strength.

7. Aeolus

In Homer’s The Odyssey, Aeolus plays a crucial role in Odysseus’ long journey by controlling the winds that determine whether the hero reaches Ithaca or remains lost at sea. Living on the floating island of Aeolia, Aeolus welcomes Odysseus and his crew for a month before helping them return home. He captures the dangerous winds inside an ox-hide bag, leaving only the gentle West Wind to guide their ships toward Ithaca.

However, just as their homeland comes into view, Odysseus’ exhausted crew opens the bag, believing it contains treasure, unleashing a storm that sends them back to sea. Aeolus refuses to help them again, believing the gods have turned against Odysseus. In Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Aeolus’s power may be portrayed through realistic storms, navigation challenges, and the crew’s fatal mistakes, turning a mythological event into a human story of desperation and distrust.

8. Heracles

During Odysseus’ descent into the Underworld in Homer’s The Odyssey, he encounters the shadow of one of Greece’s greatest legends: Heracles. Unlike other figures Odysseus meets among the dead, Heracles represents a different kind of warning. The true hero has already achieved immortality on Mount Olympus, but his phantom remains in Hades, still carrying his bow and the memories of his suffering. Heracles recognizes the pain behind Odysseus’ journey, comparing the king of Ithaca’s endless struggles with his own Twelve Labors.

Their encounter highlights a central idea of Greek mythology: even heroes chosen by fate must endure unimaginable hardships before finding peace. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has not revealed casting details for Heracles, and the character is not among the announced roles. His absence allows the film to keep its focus entirely on Odysseus’ psychological battle, treating the hero’s trauma and survival as the heart of the story rather than introducing another legendary figure.

9. Calypso

After years of war, loss, and wandering, Odysseus reaches an island that appears to offer everything he has been searching for: safety, comfort, and eternal peace. But in Homer’s The Odyssey, Calypso’s island of Ogygia becomes a beautiful prison. The immortal nymph rescues Odysseus after he loses his crew and ship, eventually falling in love with him and keeping him by her side for seven years. She offers him immortality and a life beyond human suffering, yet Odysseus remains haunted by memories of Ithaca, Penelope, and the life he left behind.

In Christopher Nolan’s 2026 adaptation, Calypso is one of the few mythological figures brought to life physically, with Charlize Theron portraying the character. Nolan’s version transforms Ogygia into an isolated and emotionally suffocating landscape, focusing on the loneliness, obsession, and heartbreak behind Calypso’s relationship with Odysseus. Her role becomes less about magical captivity and more about the psychological struggle between love, freedom, and the impossible desire to hold onto someone who wants to go home.

10. Ino

Not every god in The Odyssey exists to test Odysseus. Some appear to offer mercy when he has nothing left. In Homer’s epic, Ino, also known as Leucothea, plays a brief yet crucial role in Odysseus’ survival. After he leaves Calypso’s island, Poseidon’s fury unleashes a violent storm that destroys his raft and leaves him struggling against the sea. As he faces almost certain death, Ino rises from the waves and offers him a way to survive. She gives Odysseus her magical veil, instructing him to abandon the wreckage, trust her protection, and swim toward the shores of Phaeacia.

Her intervention becomes a rare moment of divine compassion during his long journey home. In Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Ino has no announced actor and is not included among the revealed cast. Her absence reflects Nolan’s grounded approach, replacing supernatural rescue with Odysseus’ physical endurance and determination. Yet her role remains significant as a symbol of hope arriving at the hero’s lowest point.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey will transform Greek mythology by shifting the focus from visible gods to the human experience of fate, survival, and consequence. While figures like Zeus, Poseidon, and Helios may remain unseen forces, their influence will be felt through major character arcs, including Odysseus’ suffering, Athena’s guidance, Calypso’s emotional captivity, and Circe’s psychological manipulation, brought to life by the film’s star-studded cast
