House of the Dragon Season 4 has already been confirmed as the final chapter of House of the Dragon, with showrunner Ryan Condal set to bring the Dance of the Dragons to its brutal conclusion. The season is targeting a 2028 release, giving the production ample time to close out the sprawling Targaryen civil war storyline properly. Condal has been clear that this finale will tie up the central conflict rather than stretch it further, which should satisfy longtime readers of the source material.

While the main series heads toward its ending, a smaller, gentler corner of Westeros is already carrying the torch forward.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on Martin's Dunk and Egg novellas, premiered its first season in January 2026 and quickly carved out its own identity within the franchise. Season 2 has been confirmed for the first half of 2027 and will adapt The Sworn Sword, continuing the more intimate, smallfolk-focused tone that sets this corner of the universe apart. Additional seasons are expected as the remaining Dunk and Egg material gets adapted one book at a time.

As the small-scale stories continue, HBO is simultaneously eyeing something on a much grander, big-screen scale.

Warner Bros. has confirmed a theatrical film centered on Aegon the Conqueror and his sisters, chronicling the invasion that founded the Targaryen dynasty and created the Iron Throne itself. The project is being positioned as a major event release rather than a quiet streaming addition, signaling real confidence from the studio. No firm release date exists yet, though industry expectations point to 2028 or later given how packed the current television slate already is.

While that origin story eventually reaches multiplexes, another founding-era figure is getting his own very different treatment.

The project, once known as Sea Snake, focused on Corlys Velaryon's legendary voyages, has shifted from a live-action series into an animated one. Genndy Tartakovsky, known for Samurai Jack and Primal, has been linked to the production in multiple reports, which would bring a distinctive visual style to the Velaryon family history. Steve Toussaint, who plays Corlys on House of the Dragon, has spoken positively about the direction the project has taken.

As the Velaryon fleet takes shape on screen, several other prequels and sequels remain further back in the pipeline.

George R. R. Martin has mentioned roughly five or six additional projects still in development, and a few have taken clearer shape than others. Ten Thousand Ships would follow Princess Nymeria and the Rhoynar people on their journey to Dorne nearly a thousand years before the events of Game of Thrones, while The Golden Empire is an animated series set in the distant eastern region of Yi Ti. A sequel following Arya Stark's adventures after the original series has also entered early development, with writer Quoc Dang Tran attached, though no casting decisions have been made. Flea Bottom, by contrast, has already been canceled, and the long-discussed The Long Night pilot never moved forward at all.
