In a 2023 interview with The Times UK, Irish actor Conleth Hill opened up about his deep dissatisfaction regarding the final season. Hill shared that he was completely inconsolable upon learning about the abrupt demise of Lord Varys in the second-to-last episode. The actor felt the ultimate narrative was rushed and deeply flawed.
"I felt that the last series was a bit rushed. I was inconsolable, but now I'm fine about it. I thought I'd done something wrong," Hill stated. This lack of a proper conclusion with his chief political rival, Littlefinger, heavily amplified his frustration regarding the final episodes.
The actor acknowledged the earlier successes of the HBO series but remained disappointed by the character development. He felt that the showrunners stripped the master of whispers of his signature intelligence during the final two seasons. Ultimately, the forced plotting failed to resonate with the individuals who built the show.
The tragic transformation of the Dragon Queen left the leading lady reeling in disbelief.
Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen
Emilia Clarke experienced a massive, jarring character shift in an incredibly short span of time as Daenerys became a tyrant. The actress admitted that reading the final script completely overwhelmed her, causing her to walk aimlessly for hours.
“And I went for a walk. I walked out of the house, took my keys and phone, and walked back with blisters on my feet. I didn't come back for five hours”, she said to Entertainment Weekly in 2019. She knew immediately that the sudden villainous turn would cause immense backlash among viewers.
“It f***** me up,” she said in a 2018 Vanity Fair report. She believed that more screen time could have properly justified the tragic genocide at King's Landing. Despite her personal doubts, she accepted that a vast, complex story could never satisfy everyone.
"I always knew that the show was never going to satisfy everyone," she said to The New Yorker. The lasting flavor of the finale continues to complicate her relationship with the iconic role.
Even the veteran actors who watched from the sidelines found themselves completely perplexed.
Charles Dance as Tywin Lannister
Actor Charles Dance last appeared on the series during the fourth season, but he watched the finale as a viewer. His immediate reaction to the ultimate episode was one of sheer confusion rather than cinematic fulfillment. The veteran performer felt the resolution lacked the traditional narrative weight of the earlier years.
"I was confused," he told Good Morning Britain.
Dance explained that the final scenes involving the surviving characters felt incredibly hollow and mundane. He noted that watching powerful figures casually sit around a table felt like an anticlimactic ending for such an epic saga. The bizarre choices left him questioning the creative direction of the entire finale. For Dance, the monumental television phenomenon seemingly concluded with a whimper rather than a roar.
The main hero of the story expected a much different battlefield destiny.
Kit Harington as Jon Snow
Kit Harington confessed that he always expected the highly anticipated series finale to deeply divide the global audience. The actor harboured major personal grievances regarding how certain battles concluded. Harington admitted he was quite angry that Jon Snow did not deliver the final blow to the Night King.
Having spent seasons preparing for that ultimate confrontation, he felt a bit shortchanged when Arya Stark claimed the kill.
"I was a bit pissed off, only because I wanted to kill the Night King!" he said to The Hollywood Reporter in 2019. He eventually accepted the twist because it beautifully concluded the journey of his co-star. The physical and emotional toll of the final seasons heavily impacted the actor during production.
The ruthless queen of Westeros met a surprisingly quiet and restricted end.
Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister
Lena Headey revealed that her initial reaction to the ultimate fate of Cersei Lannister was incredibly mixed. The actress openly desired a much grander d**** scene or a final, physical confrontation with a major rival.
"I will say I wanted a better death," Headey said to The Guardian. Instead, her character perished beneath the crumbling rocks of the Red Keep alongside her brother. She believed that the showrunners faced an impossible task in trying to please every single viewer.
"But I just think they couldn't have pleased everyone. No matter what they did, I think there was going to be some big comedown from the climb”, she added.
Despite her initial disappointment, discussions with her co-stars helped her find some peace with the quiet ending. However, she still maintained that the final season represented a major drop from the previous narrative heights.
The young assassin of Winterfell nearly followed a much darker path of vengeance.
Maisie Williams as Arya Stark
Maisie Williams was entirely convinced that Arya Stark would use her magical faceless training to assassinate Cersei Lannister. She expected to read a script where Arya disguised herself as Jaime Lannister to execute the queen.
"I wanted Arya to kill Cersei even if it means [Arya] dies too," Williams told Entertainment Weekly. The actress was shocked to discover that her character would choose a peaceful path instead. Ultimately, Williams expressed genuine happiness that her character received an unexpectedly positive and adventurous conclusion. It stood out as a rare happy ending in a notoriously brutal television universe.
"It gave me a place to take Arya that I never thought I'd go with her again”, she added.
The tragic loss of a fan favourite highlighted deeper structural issues within the production.
Nathalie Emmanuel as Missandei
Nathalie Emmanuel addressed the intense controversy surrounding the sudden and brutal death of Missandei. As the only prominent woman of color on the series, her execution sparked widespread criticism regarding diversity. Emmanuel welcomed the critiques, agreeing that the character deserved a more impactful and meaningful departure.
The actress wished she had been granted more scenes to showcase her character's brilliance before the execution.
"The one thing I would say is I really had wished that I had more time or scenes this season, maybe with Daenerys or even with Cersei, scenes where we get to see her being brilliant before she dies," she said to Entertainment Weekly. The narrative choices surrounding her death ultimately accelerated the tragic downward spiral of the Targaryen forces.
The radical shift in writing quality forced some viewers to voice their outrage.
Natalia Tena as Osha
Natalia Tena did not hold back her immense dislike for the final episodes. She enjoyed the initial episodes of the final season but felt the quality collapsed immediately afterward. Tena remarked that the final episodes felt as though they were written by entirely different people.

"The caliber of writing towards the end and the plots and everything that happens and how they wrapped it up compared to any other season, any other bit, it just feels like it's been written by different people”, she said in Yahoo! podcast White Wine Question Time.
The actress became so enraged by the plot holes that she ranted to her boyfriend for an hour. She even called her friends to complain about how the writers wrapped up the complex storylines. The legacy of the show remains permanently compromised by those final decisions. The final season of Game of Thrones alienated its audience and left its own cast members deeply frustrated by rushed storylines and unfulfilled character arcs.
