Stephen Colbert may be one of late-night television’s biggest legends, but away from the cameras, he has equally embraced life as a devoted father to his three children, Madeleine Colbert, Peter Colbert, and John Colbert. The longtime host officially signed off from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on May 21, 2026, closing the curtain on his historic 11-year run, while continuing to balance a deeply private family life alongside his wife, Evelyn McGee-Colbert.

Born around 1995, Madeleine Colbert is Stephen Colbert and Evelyn McGee-Colbert’s firstborn daughter and arguably the calmest mind inside the famously witty household. After graduating from Yale University, she quietly carved out a respected journalism career under the name Madeleine Carlisle, later working with TIME and The Atlantic before eventually landing at 60 Minutes as an associate producer. Colbert has often described her daughter as deeply thoughtful and emotionally sharp, once recalling a chaotic night after John’s birth when he raised his voice at the kids, only for Madeleine Colbert to quietly ask through tears, “This is how you teach children, by making them cry?” The moment instantly shattered the tension, with Stephen Colbert later admitting she completely humbled him.
"My daughter said, 'Why are you yelling at us?' and I said, 'I'm trying to discipline you!' And then she looked up at me with her tear-stained eyes and said, 'This is how you teach children, by making them cry,' " Colbert told BuzzFeed.
Meanwhile, she also carries one of the family’s most unexpected Hollywood connections, as Jennifer Garner once babysat her as a child. After meeting Stephen Colbert during a 1996 appearance on Spin City, Garner offered to watch Madeleine Colbert while Evelyn attended Italian classes. Years later, Garner still remembered her as a “precocious and adorable” little girl during a 2017 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
While Madeleine Colbert quietly ruled the newsroom lane, Stephen Colbert’s second child Peter Colbert slowly drifted deeper into filmmaking chaos, creativity, and even Middle-earth itself
Peter Colbert
Unlike his siblings’ quieter media careers, Peter Colbert slowly drifted straight toward filmmaking, production, and fantasy-world storytelling. Stephen Colbert once revealed that, despite strict television limits at home, Peter Colbert had a hilarious weakness for commercials. According to Father Colbert, the second advertisement appeared on screen, he would instantly fall into a trance, repeating, “I want that. I hear, and I obey,” eventually forcing the family to mute commercials altogether during TV time.
"I've instituted a new rule that when commercials come on, my daughter has to press the mute button. Otherwise, Peter falls into a trance: I want that. I want that. I hear, and I obey." He revealed in his 2011 biography, And Nothing But the Truthiness.
Over the years, Peter Colbert built his own creative lane under the surname McGee rather than Colbert. After appearing alongside Stephen Colbert and his younger brother John as hooded Laketown spies in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, he later expanded into directing, writing, sound production, and acting. While studying at Northwestern University, he created projects like At the Crossroads Down Yonder and Where’s Noah?, before later working on Those Who Move Mountains and the 2024 short film The Virgin. Reports now state Peter Colbert is also collaborating with Stephen Colbet on a new Lord of the Rings screenplay project announced in 2026.
John Colbert
As the youngest among Stephen Colbert and Evelyn McGee-Colbert’s three children, John Colbert largely grew up away from the spotlight while still quietly stepping into film and acting projects over the years. The Late Show host once jokingly admitted in a 2014 interview that 12-year-old John was the “only kid who still liked him” at the time, humorously blaming teenage years for slowly destroying his cool-dad status at home. Despite maintaining a very private online presence, the young Colbert later made small appearances alongside Stephen Colbert and Peter Colbert in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Over the years, John Colbert additionally explored acting through several short films, most notably Cardboard by Your Name, where he played a teenager emotionally attached to a cardboard cutout of Danny DeVito. Fans also briefly spotted him during The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s at-home COVID-19 episodes in 2020 while Colbert filmed from home. Reports additionally revealed that the boy graduated from Yale University in May 2026. Reflecting on fatherhood over the years, Stephen Colbert once admitted that parenting remained one of life’s most overwhelming yet beautiful experiences, saying it was something no one could ever truly explain until becoming a parent themselves.
And while stars like Nathan Lane continue pouring tributes toward Stephen Colbert’s long reign over late-night television, away from the spotlight, he also quietly embraced life as a loving father to three children who now seem to have carved successful paths of their own through journalism, filmmaking, and entertainment.
