Hollywood is filled with legendary "what if" casting moments that could have completely reshaped film history. Iconic roles were often offered to actors before landing in the hands of the performers we now associate them with forever. Tom Selleck was nearly Indiana Jones before commitments to Magnum P.I. forced him to decline.

Matt Damon was James Cameron's first choice for Jake Sully in Avatar, but he passed to work on The Bourne Ultimatum. Will Smith turned down Neo in The Matrix for Wild Wild West. Tom Hanks declined The Shawshank Redemption, and Harrison Ford wasn't George Lucas's first pick for Han Solo.

These near-misses prove how fragile destiny can be in cinema. Amidst all these misses, Ethan Hawke talks about the biggest miss in his acting career.

Ethan Hawke jokes about missing Titanic role

Ethan Hawke has openly admitted he regrets turning down the role of Jack Dawson in Titanic, though his feelings are layered with perspective. The part ultimately went to Leonardo DiCaprio, launching him into global superstardom. Hawke instead moved forward with films like Gattaca and Before Sunrise, carving a very different path.

“I sat there watching him, and it was like watching a Beatle,” he told The Telegraph in 2025, reflecting on the surreal level of attention. Despite initially feeling relieved to avoid that spotlight, Hawke admitted there was a lingering sense of what might have been. He confessed that landing on the Titanic could have provided lifelong career security.

“Secretly, I couldn't help thinking that if I had got it, maybe I could have lived exactly the life I wanted to,” he said, before jokingly adding, “Damn DiCaprio!”

At the same time, Hawke recognizes the personal trade-offs behind such massive success. Missing out on Titanic led him to Gattaca, where he met Uma Thurman. Their relationship resulted in their daughter, Maya Hawke, adding a deeply personal silver lining to a career “what if.”
