Erin Moriarty is not hesitant to speak about the challenges that led to a major knee injury. In an Instagram story, the actress revealed that filming episode 4 of The Boys season 5 was particularly difficult, as her health struggles peaked during that time. Her feet often went numb, which led to several falls, and just before shooting her segment, she fell and shredded her knee. After the episode's premiere, the actress also shared a photo of her bandaged knee on her story.
She revealed that this is why she does not have many behind-the-scenes shots from this season, as her health continued to worsen. As many know, it was in June 2025 when Moriarty shared her diagnosis of Graves' disease, which she had initially brushed off as stress or fatigue. While she has improved after treatment, the actress made sure to express her frustration over how little this condition is talked about.
“This isn't a pity post. It's mostly to say: f*** autoimmune disease. F*** it so hard. F*** the ignorance surrounding it, too. I can't remedy that ignorance but not being outspoken about it occasionally, feels wrong,” she wrote on her Instagram story.
For those who might not know, Graves' disease is an autoimmune condition that causes the thyroid gland to overproduce, leading to hyperthyroidism. It can show up differently for different people, with symptoms like tremors, weight loss, eye issues, fatigue, and sleep problems. The disease is treatable, but it has no cure.
While Moriarty was dealing with her own challenges, the last season brought its own set of pressures for the team behind The Boys.
Eric Kripke was worried during The Boys season 5 development
With a massive fandom, The Boys has become one of the most popular shows focusing on not-so-heroic superheroes. Much like the massive fandom, the pressure has been immense throughout its run, especially when it comes to wrapping up the final season the right way. The show’s creator, Eric Kripke, recently opened up about the challenge of an ending that lives up to expectations without disappointing viewers.
“I approached it with absolute terror ... I was not confident ... because people do a weird thing where they retroactively judge a show based on the finale,” Kripke said to The River.

Kripke further explained that Game of Thrones, which was impressive for most of its run, had only three bad episodes, which unfortunately happened to be the last few. And that ultimately shaped how a portion of the fandom viewed the entire show. Considering that incident, the pressure is understandable, as Kripke wanted to avoid repeating that kind of backlash. For now, things seem to be under control, but how long that lasts remains to be seen.
