Director Enrico Casarosa has revealed that Mark Ruffalo was cast as the lead in Pixar's Gatto after the filmmaker noticed the actor's genuine love for cats through his social media posts. Pixar's upcoming original film Gatto has already generated buzz for its unique setting and star-studded cast, but the story behind Mark Ruffalo's casting is just as intriguing as the movie itself. Instead of choosing the actor through a conventional process alone, director Enrico Casarosa found inspiration in Ruffalo's authentic personality off-screen.

As excitement continues to build ahead of the film's release, Casarosa has shared what ultimately convinced him that Ruffalo was the perfect actor to voice Nero, the scrappy black cat at the center of Pixar's latest adventure.

According to Enrico Casarosa, Mark Ruffalo's genuine affection for cats played a major role in his casting. After noticing how frequently the actor shared his love for felines on social media, the Luca director felt he had found the perfect voice for Nero, the scrappy black cat at the heart of Gatto. Ruffalo's warmth and personality made him a natural fit for the emotionally driven Pixar story.

"He's used to voice acting because of Hulk, he wanted to ADR everything but we want the voice first & then we animate," Casarosa said about Mark Ruffalo in a recent interview with Discussing Film.

Enrico Casarosa also praised Ruffalo's experience as a voice performer through his work as the Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while explaining how Pixar's animation process differs from live-action productions. He noted that, unlike many blockbuster productions that rely heavily on additional dialogue recording (ADR) after filming, Pixar builds its characters around the actors' original vocal performances before the animation process begins.

Although the conversation primarily focused on politics and activism, the discussion briefly turned to the actor's work in superhero films.

"I'm going to please myself as far as my art goes," Ruffalo said, a remark that became the defining takeaway from his answer.

He explained that his theater background never encouraged strict genre distinctions, arguing that acting remains the same whether the project is Shakespeare, comedy, drama, or a superhero blockbuster. For Ruffalo, creative fulfillment has always taken priority over outside opinions.

With Gatto set to arrive in 2027, Casarosa's comments offer fans an early glimpse into the thoughtful casting decisions behind Pixar's newest original adventure. Ruffalo's passion for cats, combined with his extensive performance experience, appears to have made him an ideal match for Nero's journey through the film's stylized feline version of Venice.
