Rhaenyra Targaryen refuses to accept Jace's death the moment she learns of it, pleading for his body to respond as if sheer will could undo the tragedy. Emma D'Arcy explained that in the House of the Dragon season 3 episode, Rhaenyra's first instinct is denial, as the loss is simply too overwhelming to process.

"I think the truth is, for Rhaenyra, it’s an insurmountable loss, and it’s a reality that is too terrible to reckon with,"  D'Arcy said to Variety.

She then added, saying, "So the first feeling, the first instinct, is sort of utter denial and to try to push back against that dawning terrible reality. It was a hard day at work," describing Rhaenyra's attempt to resist a reality too painful to accept.

Variety also reported that the hardest scene of the season for D'Arcy involved engaging with Jace's lifeless body, a moment the actor dreaded filming for weeks beforehand. Harry Collett, who plays Jace, sensed the toll the scene was taking and gave D'Arcy space all morning before checking in gently at lunch. D'Arcy called the gesture deeply moving, crediting Collett's intuition and professionalism for making an unbearable scene easier to film.

While that grief humanizes Rhaenyra, the throne room moments later reveal a far colder side of her.

Rhaenyra Targaryen's sorrow curdles into something far harder once she and Daemon Targaryen seize the Red Keep. She personally beheads Otto Hightower in front of the gathered guards, a brutal display meant to project strength rather than vengeance. D'Arcy noted that Rhaenyra has spent two seasons fighting to be respected as a ruler in a patriarchal world, and this act forces her to mirror the dominance men have always used to hold power. Whether this marks a true departure from herself remains deliberately unresolved.

The body count from the premiere makes Rhaenyra's hardening all the more devastating to watch unfold. Episode 1 already claimed Jacaerys, along with Tyland Lannister, Jason Lannister, and the fearsome admiral Sharako Lohar, leaving both Targaryen factions reeling. Each loss pushes the Dance of the Dragons further from diplomacy and closer to total ruin. Jace's death, more than any other, becomes the breaking point that sets Rhaenyra firmly on her path toward becoming Rhaenyra the Cruel.
