Emily Blunt plays the role of a TV meteorologist, Margaret, in Disclosure Day. However, she revealed that she had no point of reference for the experiences her character has had. And that made her go through stories of alleged encounters with extraterrestrial life.
“I just had nothing to springboard, to base [my character on] other than watching endless documentaries about people who have experienced something and the reality of what that felt like for them,” she said in an interview with Discussing Film.
Her research included watching congressional hearings and documentaries about people who reported encounters with mysterious phenomena. This experience also had an impact on her. Speaking on The Brandon Davis Show, the actress revealed that she was impressed by the genuine sincerity with which people shared their stories.
"I think that the thing that I was struck by was how inarguable it seemed to me that people were lying. There was this absolute peaceful truth pouring out of them,” she said.
The actress revealed that learning about other people’s stories raised several questions in her heart. And this curiosity and urge to explore became a huge part of how she portrayed her character, Margaret, on screen. As for the question part, this was perhaps what director Steven Spielberg may have wanted to.
Spielberg in his interviews, explained that the movie is more than just exploring extraterrestrial life.
Steven Spielberg reveals complicated questions posed by Disclosure Day
Steven Spielberg’s movie follows humanity as it comes face to face with evidence of extraterrestrial life. However, the film also explores deeper human questions. More than science, these questions revolve around faith, belief, and humanity’s place in the universe.
"Is God our God only on this planet, or is God a God for every system where there's civilization?" Spielberg said on CBS's Sunday Morning.
