Emilia Clarke brutally exposed her deepest fears during her moving speech at Variety's Power of Women London, presented by Lifetime, revealing the crushing shame she carried after surviving two brain hemorrhages in her 20s.
"For a number of years, I felt that I had cheated death, and it was coming to get me," she confessed to the audience, describing how she believed she'd done something wrong and didn't deserve to survive. The 37-year-old actress explained how she initially kept her medical crisis hidden even from HBO.
"In 2011, I didn't want anyone to know about my brain bleeds. I was ashamed and overwhelmed by a diagnosis I didn't understand".
She revealed that she and her family did not tell the network until after her second hemorrhage in 2014, waiting until doctors confirmed she would not die. When Clarke finally shared her story publicly in 2019 through her charity SameYou, which she founded with her mother Jenny, the response transformed her shame into purpose.
Well the Khaleesi's journey from silence to advocacy also arrives as the Game of Thrones universe prepares for an ambitious new chapter.
