Musk documentary has really pulled on the heartstrings of the Venice Film Festival, inciting a four-minute standing ovation from the audience. At the complex intersection of generational brilliance and erratic chaos lies a billionaire figure driven by a messianic desire to save humanity. Yet, Elon Musk is defined by extreme volatility, intense operational methods, and an insatiable appetite for risk.

That fascinating duality is finally deconstructed in Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney's new documentary, Musk. It is an incisive feature that attempts to swap the billionaire's heavily cultivated mythology with a deeply polarizing, unvarnished portrait.

And maybe it was this raw, uncensored reality of things about the billionaire’s life that connected with the Venice Film Festival crowd and got them to appreciate the film with a four-minute standing ovation.

Four-hour Elon Musk doc stuns at Venice Film Festival

At the Venice Film Festival, Musk, a sharp, thought-provoking four-hour documentary on the richest man in the world, received a four-minute standing ovation. The film, which was directed by Oscar winner Alex Gibney, seemed to captivate spectators within Lido's renowned Palazzo del Cinema despite its long four-hour running time.

After the clapping subsided, one individual in the crowd shouted, "Thank you!" (via Variety) Two of the documentary's interview subjects, tech writer Zoë Schiffer and influencer Ashley St. Clair, who dated Musk and gave birth to his thirteenth child last year, accompanied Gibney at the premiere.

In 2023, Gibney began filming his documentary about Musk, which his subject has referred to as "a hit piece" sight unseen. Gibney's portfolio includes Enron: The Smartest Guys in the RoomMea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God, the Scientology centered Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Disbelief, and alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election Agents of Chaos.

Elon Musk, Genius or Madman? Documentary Teaser Puts Billionaire on Trial

Musk is more than just a documentation of the tech giant’s professional endeavors, but a deep dive into his character and motivations.

Musk takes viewers into the mind of the Tesla founder

According to a director's statement, Musk is redefining the tale of the tech giant as the confidence man of the twenty-first century. Despite not participating in the documentary, Musk makes an appearance through AI as an eerie, video game-like avatar alongside actual interviews with his father, Errol Musk; his first wife, Justine Musk; Geoffrey Hinton, the "godfather of AI"; co-founders of Tesla and LinkedIn, Martin Eberhard and Reid Hoffman, among others.

Ashley St. Clair told reporters at the documentary's press launch in Venice earlier on Tuesday that she was able to be interviewed for the movie because she declined to sign a $40 million NDA following the birth of Musk's thirteenth kid last year. On October 16, Musk will be released in theaters in the United States through independent distributor Bleecker Street. It will then be streamed on HBO Max.
