During the film festival, a reporter questioned Mads Mikkelsen and The Promised Land director Nikolaj Arcel about the “lack of diversity” on screen. During a Q&A, the reporter mentioned that films must meet certain criteria to be considered for the night’s top award at the Academy Awards. After listening to the claims, Mikkelsen shot back at the reporter.

“Are you? I’m serious and honest, because you’re putting us on the spot, so you answer the question,” he said.

“Well, first of all, the film takes place in Denmark in the 1750s, yeah, we do have a big plot line, you know, about a girl of color who is being subjected to racism, okay, and you know, which was very rare for people of color in Denmark.” Nikolaj Arcel noted that the film does feature a character of color.

“Almost nobody, she was probably at the time the only one in the entire country of Denmark, so it was uh I would say that it hasn't been it it wasn't a thought in our mind that that I think it would be a little weird uh you know if it's just a historical it's how it was in that 1750,” he continued.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk recently shared the viral clip on X and wrote in the caption, “Yes.”
