Few creators have blurred the line between video games and cinema quite like Hideo Kojima. Kojima is known for his cinematic approach to storytelling, making his take on a new film all the more intriguing. While the Death Stranding creator has long drawn inspiration from cinema, he has often spoken about movies and filmmakers that have caught his eye. His latest viewing has now turned to Anne Hathaway’s The End of Oak Street, giving Kojima the chance to weigh in on the film’s bizarre combination and intriguing plot.

Hideo Kojima praises The End of Oak Street after IMAX viewing

Following the screening of The End of Oak Street in IMAX, Hideo Kojima spoke about the film as a mixture of The Drifting Classroom and Jurassic Park, appreciating its unique 80s-style entertainment. Kojima also referred to director David Robert Mitchell and to the dinosaurs presented in the film. His comments offer an interesting first impression of the new Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor adventure film.

“I watched “The End of Oak Street” in IMAX. “The Drifting Classroom” x “Jurassic Park,” an ’80s-flavored entertainment movie, and a “merciless family movie” with a strong dose of David Robert Mitchell. There were also some “feathered dinosaurs,” though they weren’t colorful”, Kojima wrote, offering a playful take on the film’s unusual mix of influences.

Just like Kojima did in his X post, The End of Oak Street is receiving praise for its ’80s and ’90s nostalgia of adventure. Critics have praised it for its Spielbergian charm, breakneck pace and ability to capture the excitement of classic Hollywood blockbusters. It has been called wild, chaotic and thrilling, and the old-school approach has appealed to audiences who miss that era of big-screen adventure filmmaking. Additionally, the film’s suspense, spectacle and retro influences have helped it to stand out among recent genre releases.

Moreover, the dinosaur sequences in the film have also become a big talking point among critics. It has got unexpected moments, jaw-dropping dino violence and constant escalation, reviewers say, with critics observing that the story rarely gives audiences a chance to catch their breath. It seems to be working quite well, with the film’s frenetic action and nostalgia-fueled adventure helping it earn strong early reviews. It currently holds an 86% Tomatometer score and a 78% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes.
